Catholic girls, boys reach semis

Catholic High’s girls overcame St. Gertrude of Richmond 52-36 Wednesday night in Virginia Beach to reach today’s semifinals of the Virginia Independen­t Schools Athletic Associatio­n Division I tournament.

Cate Carlson had 15 points and 11 rebounds, Jemma Eleby had 15 points and 12 rebounds and Jorah Eppley had 13 points, six assists and four steals for the Crusaders, who will play top-seeded Paul VI at noon today at Benedictin­e’s gym in Richmond.

Division II: Norfolk Christian came back from an 18-point deficit to defeat host Seton 56-54 in Manassas. The fifth-seeded Ambassador­s earned the right to face top-seeded Virginia Academy, from Northern Virginia, in a semifinal at 9 a.m. today at Benedictin­e.

Justice Brown-Jones scored 19 points and had seven rebounds for Norfolk Christian, and Abuna Ruop scored 14 points and had 18 rebounds.

Division III: Keira Kilkenny had 31 points and 10 rebounds as top-seeded Walsingham Academy defeated North Cross of Roanoke 53-42, moving into a 7:15 semifinal tonight against Brunswick Academy at Benedictin­e.

Boys

Division I: Catholic extended its area-best winning streak to 30 games with a 71-49 home victory over Woodberry Forest in a quarterfin­al in Virginia Beach.

Josiah Rickards led the Crusaders (34-2) with 21 points, seven rebounds, three steals and five assists. CJ McPherson had 14 points, Jaiden Cancela had 13 points and five rebounds, Brayden Thorne had 12 points and four assists and Aidan Filippini had five steals and five assists.

Catholic, seeded third, will go to Virginia State’s Multi-Purpose Center to face second-seeded St. Anne’s-Belfield of Charlottes­ville in a semifinal at 9 tonight.

Division IV: Second-seeded Hampton Christian Academy overcame St. Michael the Archangel of Fredericks­burg 68-50, advancing the Warriors to a 10:30 a.m. semifinal today at Virginia State against third-seeded Carlisle of Martinsvil­le.
