Former Lake Taylor star’s big game isn’t enough for WVU

Despite 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals from Lake Taylor High alumna JJ Quinerly, 10th-seeded West Virginia lost 75-62 Friday to seventh-seeded Arizona in NCAA women’s first-round tournament play in College Park, Maryland.

Cate Reese scored 25 points and Arizona teammate Esmery Martinez had a double-double against the Mountainee­rs (19-12), her former team.

The Wildcats (22-9) never trailed, ending a three-game slide, and they’ll play Sunday against second-seeded Maryland at the Terrapins’ Xfinity Center.

No. 2 Iowa 95, No. 15 Southeaste­rn Louisiana 43:

Caitlin Clark had 26 points and 12 assists and Monika Czinano added 22 points for the Hawkeyes (27-6), who will play No. 10 seed Georgia in the second round Sunday. Clark, an Associated Press firstteam All-American who was third in the nation in scoring at 27 points per game, added seven assists.

Cierria Cunningham led the visitors (21-10) with 15 points.

No. 10 Georgia 66, No. 7 Florida State 54: Diamond Battles scored 21 points and Audrey Warren added 11 points as Georgia won in Iowa City.

Jordan Isaacs had 10 points and Javyn Nicholson had 13 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs (22-11).

FSU (23-10) had just eight available players for the tournament. Freshman guard Ta’Niya Latson, the ACC Rookie of the Year, and sophomore guard O’Mariah Gordon were out with injuries.

No. 3 Notre Dame 82, No. 14 Southern Utah 56: Forward Maddy Westbeld scored 20 points and led the host Irish. Guard Sonia Citron chipped in 14 points and a season-high six assists.

Citron, Notre Dame’s leading scorer, transition­ed into the primary facilitato­r with secondteam Associated Press All-American guard Olivia Miles out with an undisclose­d knee injury.

No. 3 LSU 73, No. 14 Hawaii 50: Angel Reese had 34 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and three blocks as the host Tigers (29-2) beat the Rainbow Wahine (18-15), moving into a second-round game Sunday against Michigan.

No. 6 Michigan 71, No. 11 UNLV 59: Emily Kiser had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Maddie Nolan added 18 points and Michigan (23-9) beat UNLV (31-3) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, snapping the Rebels’ 22-game winning streak.

Late Thursday FIRST FOUR St. John’s 66, Purdue 64:

Jayla Everett made a go-ahead shot with three-tenths of a second left, and St. John’s (23-8) edged Purdue (19-11) in a First Four game in Columbus, Ohio. St. John’s advances to play sixthseede­d North Carolina in the first round today.

Tennessee Tech 79, Monmouth 69:

Maaliya Owens and Jada Guinn each scored 18 points and Tennessee Tech (23-9) won its eighth straight game with a First Four victory over CAA Tournament champion Monmouth (18-16) in Bloomingto­n, Indiana. Tennessee Tech, a No. 16 seed, advances to face top-seeded Indiana in the first round today.
