Gelof breaks UVA’s career homer record

Jake Gelof became Virginia’s career home run leader by hitting his 38th on Tuesday in the Cavaliers’ 18-0 rout of Richmond in Charlottes­ville.

Gelof finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk and now has 13 homers and a nation-best 54 RBIs this season.

Ethan Anderson went 4-for-5 with a homer and five RBIs to lead the Cavaliers (29-4), who have won five straight and improved to 21-0 at home. Harrison Didawick added a homer and four RBIs.

UVA starter Connelly Early (7-1) limited the Spiders (14-19) to two hits in six innings. Bradley Hodges finished in the seventh inning.

The Cavaliers will host Mount St. Mary’s at 4 p.m. today.

Christophe­r Newport 6, St. Mary’s (Maryland) 2: Jackson Baird pitched seven strong innings and Alec Reilly drove in a pair of runs in Newport News as the No. 14 Captains won for the ninth time in 10 games.

Baird (5-1) struck out 10 and walked two, allowing two runs on four hits. Danny Checkosky pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Kyle Lewis a scoreless ninth to close it out.

Scott Crosson, Justin Bowers and Sam Benedict each had two hits for CNU (26-7). George Berbakos went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for St. Mary’s (6-13).

The Captains will host Virginia Wesleyan at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Lynchburg 10, Virginia Wesleyan 1: Jackson Harding went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Brandon Garcia went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs as No. 7 Lynchburg routed the Marlins in Virginia Beach.

Brandon Pond and three relievers combined on a three-hitter for Lynchburg (23-4, 12-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference). Pond gave up an unearned run on one hit and three walks in four innings.

Logan Tapman (2-0) got the victory with four scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit.

VWU (5-21-1, 4-9-1) scored its lone run in the fourth inning on Samuel Kasprow’s sacrifice fly.

Tanner Clements had two hits to lead the Marlins, who will visit Christophe­r Newport at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

Virginia Wesleyan 2-13, Averett 4-8: Virginia Wesleyan (5-20-1, 4-8-1 ODAC) split a doublehead­er with Averett (5-20-1, 2-11) in Virginia Beach, losing 4-2 before winning 13-8.

In Game 1 the Cougars’ Mason Williams was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run. Nathan Comer pitched four shutout innings to save the victory for Blake Cheatham.

Michael Burton Jr. scored both VWU runs, stole two bases and batted 2-for-4.

Cam Nolet took the loss despite striking out seven in seven innings. He walked four.

In Game 2 the Marlins went ahead 9-1 after three innings, saw Averett pull to 9-8, then recovered. Jaelen Hines, Connor Hall and Trent Hanchey all had three hits for VWU in Game 2. Hines also scored three runs.

Matt Sinko drove in three, scored two and had two hits, including VWU’s only homer. Tanner Clements had two hits and two RBIs, and Samuel Kasprow had two hits and two runs.
