Mountcastle’s double, HR power O’s past Angels

-

Ryan Mountcastle homered and doubled after entering the game as a pinch-hitter Tuesday night, and the host Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-3.

Dean Kremer (5-1) rebounded after allowing a homer to lead off the game, winning his third straight start, and Ryan O’Hearn also homered for Baltimore. O’Hearn started as the Orioles’ designated hitter in the No. 9 spot in the batting order, but after his solo shot in the second tied the game at 1, Mountcastle pinchhit for him after the Angels lifted right-hander Chase Silseth (0-1) in the fourth and replaced him with lefty Tucker Davidson.

Mountcastle greeted Davidson with a double that left men on second and third, and Cedric Mullins followed with an RBI grounder that made it 4-1 and capped Baltimore’s three-run inning.

After the Angels pulled within one, the Orioles scored three more runs in the sixth on Jorge Mateo’s sacrifice fly and Mountcastle’s two-run shot — his first homer since May 2.

Mickey Moniak homered to start the top of the first, but O’Hearn answered for the Orioles. Baltimore chased Silseth when Tarrin Vavra and Mateo hit RBI singles in the fourth.

Kremer started the season poorly, but has allowed only four runs in 17 innings over his last three starts against Atlanta, Tampa Bay and Los Angeles.

Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout each went 0 for 4 after Ohtani reached base five times a night earlier.

Marlins 5, Nationals 4: Jorge Soler

hit a two-run homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning for host Miami.

The Marlins were down to their last out when Garrett Cooper doubled off Hunter Harvey (2-1). Luis Arraez singled to score Cooper and pull Miami within 4-3. Pinch-runner Jon Berti stole second before Soler drove a 3-2 pitch by Harvey over the wall in left-center for his 10th homer.

Arraez and Cooper each had two hits, Andrew Nardi (3-1) pitched a scoreless ninth and earned the victory for the Marlins.

Trailing 2-1, the Nationals scored three runs in the eighth inning against relievers Huascar Brazoban and Steven Okert. Jeimer Candelario hit a game-tying single off Brazoban, and Dominic Smith tagged Okert for a two-run single and a 4-2 lead.

Washington starter Josiah Gray gave up seven hits, struck out five and walked three. The righthander escaped a two-out basesloaded threat in the seventh by retiring Soler on a force out.

Miami scored twice in the second on a fielding error by Gray to take a 2-0 lead. Jean Segura and Peyton Burdick hit one-out singles and Nick Fortes walked before Joey Wendle hit a grounder to first baseman Smith. Smith forced Fortes out at second, but Gray dropped shortstop C.J. Abrams’ relay throw as he covered first, allowing Segura and Burdick to score.

Washington’s Lane Thomas hit a solo homer in the sixth inning that cut the deficit to 2-1. Thomas drove an 0-1 pitch from Marlins starter Jesús Luzardo 364 feet over the wall in right for his fifth homer of the season.
