Gun solution

Re “Figure it out” (Your Views, April

26), “Abolish it” and “Gun ownership” (Your Views, April 20), and “16 years since Virginia Tech shooting, Virginia hasn’t done enough to prevent another tragedy” (Our Views, April 15): In the first letter the author admits no one can do anything with gun laws. The second letter attempts to clarify the Second Amendment, and the third corrects mistakes about the Second Amendment. The fourth demonstrates that our leaders will do little to abate gun violence. Congress is gutless when it comes to addressing the drastic rise in gun violence. It’s not a mental health issue but a gun proliferation problem.

The No. 1 killer of children is gun deaths. Conservatives claim regulating guns will make America less safe or registering them will result in their confiscation. What a shame, stricter rules might prevent death from suicides or multiple killings. Yes, people kill people because guns are everywhere and are unsafely kept in millions of homes. And sadly, 25 states don’t require a permit to carry a concealed gun in public, according to statista.com. This is not what America wants.

Let’s return to the Founding Fathers’ original intent. The late Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens had the answer, changing the amendment to read: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms — when serving in the Militia — shall not be infringed.” This is the only worthy solution.
