Norfolk Academy falls in girls soccer final
Bulldogs finish as runners-up in VISAA Division I
For the second year in a row, Trinity Christian defeated Norfolk Academy for the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division I girls soccer championship.
This time, the third-seeded Gryphons of Fairfax won 2-1 against the Bulldogs on Saturday at Ukrop Park near Richmond.
Trinity Christian scored in the third minute to go ahead. Norfolk Academy pulled even in the second half off a Ruby Garrison free kick from 35 yards, but the Gryphons regained the lead two minutes later and hung on.
Rowing Stotesbury Cup
Norfolk Academy enjoyed success at the 96th Stotesbury Cup, the world’s largest high school regatta, held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
The Bulldogs’ boys junior 4+ (Cole Houfek, Fletcher Creech, Reece Newman, Travis Carroll, Jude Carroll) won their class, which had 51 boats, to take the
George Mattson Cup.
In the Stotesbury Cup’s second-largest event, Norfolk Academy’s boys varsity 4+ (Harrison Brown, David Denson, Carter Lucas, Ethan Eveleigh, Quinn Carroll) finished fifth. Both of those groups won state titles the previous weekend.
Boys tennis VISAA Division II final North Cross 5, Norfolk Collegiate 4:
The top-seeded Raiders outlasted the Oaks for the second time this season, taking the Division II title Saturday in Roanoke.
It was a repeat crown for the Raiders, who won it last year against Hampton Roads Academy on the Navigators’ courts.
Norfolk Collegiate, also the TCIS regular-season and tournament runner-up, was led all season by LSU recruit Charles Hobbs.
Class 5 Region B semifinals
Two Eastern District teams qualified for the state quarterfinals with shutout wins Saturday at Huntington Park in Newport News. Granby, in a rare position as the top seed, downed Kecoughtan 6-0, and second-seeded Maury defeated Norview 5-0. The Comets and Commodores will play for the region championship at noon today at Huntington Park.
Girls tennis Class 5 Region B semifinals
Maury and Nansemond River earned their way to state tournament berths with victories Saturday at Huntington Park in Newport News.
The top-seeded Commodores fought off fourth-seeded Menchville 5-4 despite dominant victories at No. 1 singles and doubles by the Monarchs’ Victoria Epps, while the third-seeded Warriors overcame second-seeded Granby 5-1.
Maury and Nansemond River will square off for the region title at 11:30 a.m. today at Huntington Park.
