Social services temporarily relocating
Norfolk’s social support operations will have a new temporary home starting next week: the Attucks Theatre.
Residents seeking Norfolk Human Services can find the department’s customer service center at the Attucks Theatre at 1010 Church St. weekdays from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. starting Monday.
The customer service center, which helps residents seeking assistance with benefit programs, housing support and other programs, is being relocated during renovations.
Programs such as protective services will continue to operate around the clock, according to a city news release.
Attucks was chosen because of its ability to accommodate the essential services while also being close to the Human Services building, located about a mile away on Monticello Avenue.
Norfolk recently approved spending about $1.4 million, some partially reimbursable by the state, to improve the Norfolk Human Services building at 741 Monticello Ave., according to city budget documents.
Improvements are slated to be complete in early 2024 and will include safety and security improvements, new fencing, furnishings, signs, cameras and additional restrooms, according to city documents.
“The renovation is designed to provide a safe and secure environment and is designed around trauma-informed principles,” the city budget said. “These improvements will create a positive environment that supports customer and employee safety.”
Norfolk Human Services offers services for those being abused and for neglected children, with operations for adoption and family support, child care, energy and emergency assistance, senior tax relief, and more.
The city has advised anyone needing assistance to call 757-664-6000 or visit www.Norfolk.gov/humanservices.
