Marshall Norman “Skip” Weatherfor­d passed away peacefully on September 9, 2023, age 83.

Born on December 10, 1939, the son of Henry Norman Weatherfor­d and Ruby Clark Weatherfor­d, Skip grew up on Moore Street in South Boston, Virginia. A graduate of the Halifax County High School class of 1958, Skip attended the Newport News Apprentice School. Prior to graduating in 1960, Skip met Ann Hogge, and the two would marry on New Years’ Eve, 1961.Skip and Ann lived most of their marriage in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, where they raised two daughters, Sandra and Amy. While living in Hampton, Skip’s family were members of the Baptist community of faith, attending several different churches. Skip worked for most of his career as a quality engineer, initially for Newport News Shipbuildi­ng, then later for Stone & Webster and finally Crane Research and Engineerin­g. His work took him to numerous locations, working on such varied projects as the Surry and North Anna power plants in Virginia, Comanche Peak nuclear facility in Texas, and the Seawolf submarine. An avid sportsman, Skip greatly enjoyed both hunting and fishing, in addition to excelling for a number of years in bench-rest rifle competitio­ns. Following his retirement and the death of his first wife, Ann, in 2006, Skip met and married Faye Royster Tuck in 2011. One of Skip’s proudest accomplish­ments was purchasing his mother’s (Clark) family farm in Charlotte County, near Phenix, Virginia where he and Faye lived for several years. Skip and Faye enjoyed their many trips for genealogic­al and property research in the Clerk’s Office records in the Charlotte and Halifax County area.

Skip is survived by his spouse, Faye Royster Weatherfor­d, daughter Sandra Laity and son-inlaw Todd, daughter Amy Brown and son-in-law Michael, granddaugh­ter Emily Jaffke and her husband Patrick, grandson Mark Watts and his wife Kailee, and great-grandson Beckett.

On Saturday, September 16, 2023 starting at 10:00 a.m., a time for family and friends to gather and share their remembranc­es of Skip will take place at Powell Funeral Home in South Boston, Virginia. A funeral service will start at 11:00, followed by a graveside service at Oak Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family thank you for considerin­g a donation to the Phenix Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company or Halifax Historical Society.
