Week 1 produces new pecking order

- By Karen Guregian | masslive.com

Week 1 finished with the Jets losing Aaron Rodgers — likely for the season — just four snaps into his debut.

It also ended with the Jets beating the Bills in overtime with a walk-off punt return by Xavier Gipson.

Welcome back, NFL.

Week 1 also saw the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs lose right out of the gate.

Meanwhile, the 49ers, Lions, Browns and Packers all had statement wins.

Here are the power rankings heading into Week 2:

1. 49ers (1-0): They pretty much picked up where they left off prior to Brock Purdy getting hurt in the playoffs last year.

2. Eagles (1-0): In the strange but true department, Jalen Hurts and the Eagles offense scored just one TD in the opener against the Patriots.

3. Cowboys (1-0): There are blowouts, and then there’s what the Cowboys did to the Giants on Sunday night.

4. Dolphins (1-0): Their offense comes as advertised. It’s explosive as all get out. The defense? Didn’t live up to the hype. Wasn’t Vic Fangio supposed to fix that unit?

5. Lions (1-0): They went into Arrowhead and announced themselves as legitimate contenders.

6. Chiefs (0-1): No Travis Kelce. No Chris Jones. No miracle comeback from Patrick Mahomes. And no victory.

7. Jets (1-0): Wanted — another quarterback who will take them to the promised land.

8. Bills (0-1): Not sure who’s going to have the tougher time recovering from what went down at the Meadowlands, the Jets with their loss of Rodgers, or the Bills, who still couldn’t beat them.

9. Ravens (1-0): They won, but injuries were the story. J.K. Dobbins (torn Achilles), Marcus Williams (pectoral injury), Ronnie Stanley (knee) and Tyler Linderbaum (ankle) all went down.

10. Jaguars (1-0): Should anyone be surprised Trevor Lawrence found an instant connection with receiver Calvin Ridley?

11. Browns (1-0): It’s only been one game, but new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz looks like their best offseason acquisition.

12. Packers (1-0): Jordan Love took the baton from Rodgers and simply did what the former Packers quarterback did routinely every year — beat the bag out of the Bears.

13. Bengals (0-1): One bad game from Joe Burrow after signing his new $275 million contract, and people think the Bengals should demand their money back.

14. Chargers (0-1): They’ve discovered a ground game, which makes their offense even more dangerous. If they can discover a defense, they’ll be dangerous.

15. Saints (1-0): The Derek Carr era didn’t exactly start off with a bang, but it was good enough.

16. Raiders (1-0): Jakobi Meyers had nine catches for 81 yards, and two scores.

17. Falcons (1-0): What’s the takeaway from the Falcons notching their first Week 1 win in six years? Let’s see them do it again in Week 2.

18. Patriots (0-1): Basically, they were done in by penalties, drops, failed toe taps and curious coaching decisions on fourth down.

19. Steelers (0-1): Talk about not living up to the hype, they barely put up a fight against the 49ers.

20. Seahawks (0-1): Geno Smith, a one-hit wonder? The offense mustered just 12 total yards in the second half against the Rams.

21. Vikings (0-1): They were the kings of one-score wins last season. Figures they’d lose a one-score game right out of the gate this season.

22. Titans (0-1): Their offense amounted to five Nick Folk field goals. What that means for Ryan Tannehill is anyone’s guess.

23. Commanders (1-0): The Sam Howell era began with 114 net passing yards. They won, but that’s not going to get it done especially against the teams in their division.

24. Rams (1-0): For anyone thinking, or hoping they’d tank just to land a quarterback (USC’s Caleb Williams) next season, think again.

25. Buccaneers (1-0): For one game anyway, life without Tom Brady wasn’t as bad as many had forecast.

26. Giants (0-1): Their offensive line was even worse than feared. The mobile Daniel Jones was sacked seven times. It was a mess all around for the G-Men.

27. Colts (0-1): Anthony Richardson was fun to watch. The rookie quarterback can really move. Once he gets the kinks out with the passing game, the Colts will be in business.

28. Panthers (0-1): The last time a quarterback, drafted No. 1 overall, won his first start was in 2002 with David Carr. Bryce Young wasn’t able to change that stat.

29. Broncos (0-1): It looked like a Sean Payton offense with Russell Wilson under center. It just didn’t score like a Sean Payton offense.

30. Bears (0-1): Quarterback Justin Fields has led the team in rushing in 10 of its last 12 games. That’s not necessarily a good thing. Still no drop-back passing game to speak of.

31. Texans (0-1): C.J. Stroud wasn’t particularly good. And he wasn’t particularly bad. That’s about the norm for a rookie quarterback in his first game.

32. Cardinals (0-1): The defense made some big plays, but by and large, they still look like a team with the NFL’s worst roster.
