UNC upset for second straight week

Comeback lifts Georgia Tech over No. 17 Tar Heels

North Carolina’s dream season became nightmaris­h for the second consecutiv­e week.

Haynes King threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Brett Seither with 4:28 remaining in Atlanta, and Georgia Tech won a 46-42 thriller Saturday night to hand No. 17 UNC its second straight loss.

Overcoming an early two-touchdown blitz by UNC (6-2, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) and a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, Georgia Tech shredded the Tar Heels’ defense for 635 yards.

King was 23 of 30 for 287 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to Seither. Dontae Smith rushed for 178 yards and another score.

Coming off a shocking 31-27 home loss to Virginia, UNC appeared to be in good shape when Drake Maye hooked up with Doc Chapman on a 35-yard touchdown with 11:13 remaining, pushing the Tar Heels ahead 42-32. But just two plays later, Smith broke loose down the middle for a 70-yard touchdown, beginning the decisive comeback.

Maye threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns, to go along with a 14-yard scoring run. Omarion Hampton rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

Top 25 No. 3 Ohio State 24, Wisconsin 10:

Marvin Harrison Jr. caught two touchdown passes, TreVeyon Henderson rushed for 162 yards in his first game in more than a month, and Ohio State (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten) defeated the Badgers (5-3, 3-2) for the 10th straight time. The host Badgers played the second half without star running back Braelon Allen or wide receiver Chimere Dike due to leg injuries.

No. 5 Washington 42, Stanford 33:

Michael Penix Jr. threw for 369 yards and four touchdowns, and Washington held off a fierce comeback attempt for its 15th straight win. The visiting Huskies (8-0, 5-0 Pac-12)gottheirpa­ssinggameg­oing well enough to hold off the Cardinal (2-6, 1-5) and extend the second-longest winning streak in the nation.

Arizona 27, No. 11 Oregon State 24:

Noah Fifita threw two touchdown passes to Michael Wiley in the fourth quarter in Tucson as Arizona (5-3, 5-2 Pac-12) knocked off the Beavers (6-2, 3-2).

No. 12 Mississipp­i 33, Vanderbilt 7:

Jaxson Dart threw for one touchdown and ran for another for Ole Miss (7-1, 4-1 SEC), which scored on five consecutiv­e first-half possession­s in Oxford, Mississipp­i. Ole Miss eliminated any upset hopes of Vandy (2-7, 0-5) with a 26-0 blitz by going 5 of 5 in the red zone, opening a 23-minute stretch that spanned to the 7:40 mark in the second period.

No. 19 Air Force 30, Colorado State 13:

Zac Larrier scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run in the third quarter in a driving snowstorm in Fort Collins. It punctuated a drive aided by an unsportsma­nlike conduct penalty on the CSU bench because of fans pelting the visiting Falcons’ sideline with snowballs, and Air Force (8-0, 5-0 Mountain West) remained undefeated by defeating the Rams (3-5, 1-3). Air Force matched a school record with its 13th straight win, dating to last season.

No. 21 Tennessee 33, Kentucky 27:

Joe Milton III passed for a touchdown, Jaylen Wright and Dylan Sampson rushed for scores, and Charles Campbell kicked four field goals to help Tennessee (6-2, 3-2 SEC). The Wildcats (5-3, 2-3) featured a 372-yard passing performanc­e by Devin Leary.

No. 22 Tulane 30, Rice 28: Michael Pratt threw for 263 yards and accounted for three TDs in Houston as Tulane (7-1, 4-0 American Athletic Conference) built a 27-7 halftime lead and held on to defeat Rice (4-4, 2-2) for its sixth straight win.

No. 23 UCLA 28, Colorado 16:

Ethan Garbers threw two touchdown passes for host UCLA (6-2, 3-2 Pac-12), whose defense sacked Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders seven times and broke open a close game at halftime with three second-half touchdowns.

The Buffaloes (4-4, 1-4) had allowed 35 sacks coming into the game, tied for second-most in the Football Bowl Subdivisio­n. Sanders finished 27 of 43 for 217 yards and a touchdown.

No. 24 Southern California 50, California 49:

Jaylin Smith deflected Fernando Mendoza’s pass in the end zone on a 2-point conversion try with 58 seconds remaining in Berkeley to lift USC (7-2, 5-1 Pac-12) over the Bears (3-5, 1-4).The Trojans rallied after trailing by 11 at halftime. USC scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and went ahead 50-43 on Austin Jones’ 7-yard touchdown run with 3:33 remaining. Caleb Williams passed for 369 yards and two touchdowns.

Nation UTSA 41, East Carolina 27:

Frank Harris threw for four touchdowns in San Antonio as UTSA remained tied for the American Athletic Conference lead by beating the Pirates (1-7, 0-4). The Roadrunner­s (5-3, 4-0) won their 12th straight regular-season conference game, and 14th consecutiv­e including the Conference USA championsh­ip games from the past two seasons. They are tied atop the AAC with No. 22 Tulane and SMU.

State Virginia State 75, Lincoln 25:

The Trojans (8-1, 6-1 Central Intercolle­giate Athletic Associatio­n) celebrated Senior Day before 1,097 in Ettrick, routing the Lions (3-5, 2-4) from Pennsylvan­ia.

Jordan Davis completed 13 of 20 passes for 272 yards and four touchdowns. Woodside High graduate Tylique Ray led VSU with four catches and accounted for 71 yards, though he did not score.

The Trojans will play at Virginia Union at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hovey Field in Richmond with a berth in the CIAA title game at stake.

Virginia Union 57, Bluefield State 12:

The Panthers (8-1, 6-1 CIAA) did their part to stay in CIAA title contention, romping in West Virginia.

Christian Reid completed 12 of 19 for 276 yards and a touchdown, and Curtis Allen rushed for two scores. Said Sidibe had eight catches for 165 yards.

Carson-Newman37,Emory&Henry 7:

The Wasps (4-5, 2-5 South Atlantic Conference) fell to the Eagles (4-5, 3-4) in Jefferson City, Tennessee. The hosts’ Zane Whitson threw for 211 yards and two touchdowns.

Charles Mutter III’s 7-yard pass to Cam Abshire provided E&H’s only touchdown.

The Highland Cavaliers (2-7, 1-6 South Atlantic Conference) fell in North Carolina to the Lions (7-1, 6-1). Mars Hill quarterbac­k JR Martin ran for three touchdowns and threw for two.
