ODU women suffer home loss to Cajuns

The Old Dominion women’s shooting went cold Thursday night, resulting in a 66-61 loss to the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns at Chartway Arena in Norfolk.

Jordan McLaughlin netted 22 points for ODU (9-3, 1-1 Sun Belt), but no teammates joined her in double figures. They shot just 5 of 22 from 3-point range, compared to the Cajuns’ 6 of 14.

Tamera Johnson, just returning from an injury, led Louisiana (5-6, 1-1) with 20 points. Jaylyn James came off the bench to add 16, hitting 3 of 4 3-point shots and all five of her free throws.

Uniyah Franklin’s jumper with 8:15 remaining gave the Cajuns the lead to stay, 47-45. A 5-0 run put them ahead 60-53 and essentiall­y decided the game, denying ODU’s DeLisha Milton-Jones her 101st victory as a head coach.

The Monarchs entered the game 12th nationally in scoring defense (52.4 points per game) and 16th in the CollegeIns­ider. com Mid-Major Top 25. They will stay at home for Saturday’s 1 p.m. game against Southern Mississipp­i. No. 13 Virginia Tech 82, Wake Forest 73: Elizabeth Kitley scored 27 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, Georgia Amoore had 20 points and 10 assists and the Hokies earned their sixth straight victory. Tech (11-2, 2-0) has won 14 straight games against ACC opponents.

Tech led 43-26 at halftime behind 26 combined points from Kitley and Matilda Ekh. Elise Williams scored 18 of Wake’s 26 first-half points, going 7 of 10 from the field while her teammates combined to go 3 of 24.

MEN

Miami 95, No. 16 Clemson

82: Nijel Pack scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half, Matthew Cleveland and Norchad Omier each added 23 and Miami (11-2, 2-0 ACC) improved to 9-0 at home. Pack scored 13 points in a 21-6 run that gave the Hurricanes a nine-point lead with 10 minutes left.

Joseph Girard III scored 18 points and PJ Hall scored 17 before fouling out for Clemson (11-2, 1-1). Seton Hall 61, No. 23 Providence 57: Dre Davis scored 17 points and Kadary Richmond added 16 points

as Seton Hall pulled a road upset.

Save for a brief stretch in the second half, the Pirates (9-5, 2-1 Big East) led for the final 28 minutes.

George Mason transfer Josh Oduro led the Friars (11-3, 2-1) with 23 points. But Bryce Hopkins, the Friars’ second-leading scorer, went down near midcourt with 14:59 remaining. Thursday, he was ruled out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Winthrop 68, Longwood 60 (OT): Nick Johnson scored nine of his 15 points in overtime in a Big South opener for the Eagles (10-6) against the Lancers (12-4) in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Michael Christmas, a former Landstown High and James Madison player, finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Lancers.

High Point 85, Radford 71: Led by Kezza Giffa’s 24 points, the visiting Panthers (12-4) defeated the Highlander­s (10-6) in the Big South opener for both.

For Radford, DaQuan Smith scored 26 and former Oscar Smith High guard Kenyon Giles had 14 points and four assists.

George Mason 77, La Salle 62: Keyshawn Hall scored 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Patriots (12-2) beat the Explorers (9-5) in an Atlantic 10 opener in Philadelph­ia. Virginia Tech transfer Darius Maddox added 15 points and seven rebounds for

George Mason.

Wofford 87, VMI 85 (OT): Corey Tripp scored a career-high 28 points, including a go-ahead layup with 3.8 seconds left in overtime for the Terriers (8-6) against the Keydets (3-11) in a Southern Conference opener in Spartanbur­g, South Carolina.

Brennan Watkins recorded 24 points and four assists for VMI, which also got 20 points from Devin Butler.

N.C. State 54, Notre Dame 52: DJ Burns Jr. had 13 points, including the buzzer-beating basket for the visiting Wolfpack (10-3, 2-0 ACC) against the Fighting Irish (6-8, 1-2). N.C. State did not lead until Burns scored the game-winner to cap an 8-0 run.

Burns’ layup tied the score with 13 seconds left. Notre Dame’s Julian Roper II drew a foul but missed the front end of a one-andone. With 3 seconds left, the Wolfpack inbounded to Burns, whose left-handed mini-hook shot beat the buzzer.

Markus Burton led Notre Dame with 18 points and four assists but had six turnovers, two more than the Wolfpack team. Florida State 82, Georgia Tech 71: Chandler Jackson scored 14 points and Jamir Watkins added 11 for FSU (7-6, 1-1 ACC), which has won six consecutiv­e home games against Georgia Tech (8-5, 1-1). Miles Kelly scored 20 points and Kowacie Reeves 18 to lead the

Yellow Jackets.

Lafayette 52, Army 47: Mark Butler’s 13 points helped the Leopards (2-12) beat the Black Knights (4-10) in a Patriot League opener in Easton, Pennsylvan­ia. Army’s Josh Scovens posted 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks. Navy 62, Boston University 60:

Austin Benigni had 22 points and was 8 for 10 from the free-throw line for the host Midshipmen (5-7, 1-0 Patriot League). He hit a tiebreakin­g layup with 30 seconds remaining, giving Navy the lead for good, 59-57.

Anthony Morales, Ethan Okwuosa and Miles Brewster each scored 11 for the Terriers (5-9, 0-1).

St. Bonaventur­e 89, VCU 78: Chad Venning’s 19 points and 11 rebounds led the Bonnies (10-3) over the Rams (8-6) in an Atlantic 10 opener at Siegel Center. Christian Fermin finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and three blocks and Kuany Kuany had 13 points for VCU.

Fordham 119, George Washington 113 (3 OTs): Japhet Medor scored 24 points, Elijah Gray and Antrell Charlton each set career highs with 22 and the Rams (7-7) won in triple overtime in D.C.

Darren Buchanan Jr. finished with 38 points, six rebounds and four steals for the Revolution­aries (11-3), who had a five-game winning streak snapped. James Bishop added 32 points, six assists and three blocks.

WOMEN

No. 6 Baylor 71, TCU 50: Bella Fontleroy scored 16 of her 21 points in a big second-half comeback for Baylor (13-0, 2-0 Big 12) in the Bears’ first game at their new arena in Waco, Texas. Sedona Prince had 20 points and 10 rebounds for TCU (14-1, 1-1). No. 10 Texas 74, Texas Tech

47: Aaliyah Moore and Deyona Gaston both had their first double-doubles of the season for the Longhorns (14-1, 1-1 Big 12) in Lubbock.

Moore had 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Gaston scored 17 on 8-of-13 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Bailey Maupin scored 16 for the Red Raiders (12-3, 1-1). No. 24 West Virginia 68, Cincinnati 53: Kyah Watson scored 14 points, Jordan Harrison added 13 and Lake Taylor High alumna JJ Quinerly 12 for host WVU (13-0, 2-0 Big 12). Jillian Hayes had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Cincinnati (8-5, 0-1).
