NSU earns season-opening win

Mazell’s home run, Barham’s pitching propel the Spartans

Cam Mazell hit a two-run homer and Dalton Barham pitched six solid innings as Norfolk State defeated Mount St. Mary’s 8-3 in its baseball season opener Friday at Marty Miller Field.

Jamal Ritter added a solo shot, while Brendan Burke, Collin Curry and Jalan Jones each drove in a run for the Spartans.

Barham (1-0) gave up three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

NSU broke a 3-3 tie with a fourrun sixth.

The teams will play again at 1 p.m. today.

Holy Cross 4, William & Mary

Danny Macchiarol­a pitched 2: five innings of three-hit ball and Colin Brown hit a two-run single to cap a three-run fourth inning to lead the Crusaders to a victory in the Tribe’s season opener in Williamsbu­rg.

Joe Delossanto­s went 2 for 4 with a solo homer and Ben Parker hit an RBI single to pace W&M.

Tribe starter Nate Knowles tossed three scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. Reliever Carter Lovasz (0-1) gave up three runs in three innings.

The teams will play again at 1 p.m. today.

Peace 1, 10 innings: The host Captains, ranked 20th in Division III, began their season as their pitchers compiled 19 strikeouts — the second-most in any CNU game — and edged the Pacers. Junior transfer Doc Daniels hit a two-out RBI single to win the game in the 10th, and CNU starter Dylan Weber struck out 12 in six innings.

Virginia Wesleyan 7, Emory 6: The Marlins (2-1) edged the Eagles of Atlanta in Montgomery, Alabama, when Trevor Sheets scored the winning run on an error by the catcher in the bottom of the ninth. Micah Fox had three hits and two RBIs for the Marlins, and John Bastiaans hit a homer.

Virginia 10, Hofstra 8: Virginia, ranked 14th by d1baseball.com, rallied past the Pride before 3,575 at Disharoon Park in Charlottes­ville. Griff O’Ferrall, Anthony Stephan and freshman Henry Ford each had two hits for the Cavaliers, who overcame a 4-1 deficit. Sophomore Harrison Didawick, a former Western Branch High star, gave UVA a 7-4 cushion with a two-run homer.

Virginia Tech 10, Charlotte 0: The Hokies routed the host 49ers in an opener as Carson DeMartini (Ocean Lakes) scored three runs and socked a solo homer.

Tech pitchers Brett Renfrow, David Shoemaker, Jordan Vera and Madden Clement combined to yield just two hits. Renfrow pitched the first five innings for the victory.
