Peninsula Catholic’s Murray claims title

Peninsula Catholic 144-pounder Luke Murray was Hampton Roads’ only champion in the Virginia Independen­t Schools Athletic Associatio­n championsh­ip meet at Potomac School in McLean, pinning Charlottes­ville wrestler Eli Lianez of Covenant in 1 minute and 22 seconds.

Murray was one of four Peninsula Catholic wrestlers to finish among the top four. Roman Rossi (113) and Thomas Montgomery (132) finished third, while Jacob Steward (120) was fourth.

St. Christophe­r’s won the team title with 332.5 points, followed by Paul VI (307.5), Benedictin­e (216) and Peninsula Catholic (176).

Other third-place winners included Cape Henry’s Conner Walck (126) and Norfolk Academy’s Tucker Gaddy (157), Sam Tignor (165) and Kaleb Gibson (285).

Catholic’s Cullen Norton (106) and Jamari Barnes (190), Cape Henry’s Adam Feldman (138) and Townsend Winans (175) and Norfolk Collegiate’s Ronnie Boone (150) finished fourth.

Walsingham Academy’s’ Jeylah Hamrick won three individual events in Richmond, taking the long jump, 55-meter hurdles and 55-meter dash, to help the Trojans finish sixth as a team. St. Catherine’s was first overall, while its Richmond-area rival Collegiate was second.

Norfolk Academy’s Taylor Kulow won the high jump, and teammate Sophie Pollio was second in the shot put. Cape Henry’s Elena Granados placed first in the triple jump.

Boys indoor track and field

Cape Henry had three secondplac­e finishers: Tanner Schaedel (shot put), Ty Adamson (55) and Michael McKnew (1,600). Norfolk Christian’s Kyron Jennings was second in the 300.

Meet host St. Christophe­r’s won the team trophy, followed by Woodberry Forest. Cape Henry was seventh, and Norfolk Academy tied for ninth. —
