ODU women dominate App State

The Old Dominion women turned a close game into a rout in the third quarter and went on to win 81-62 Thursday night at Appalachia­n State.

Leading 35-34 at halftime, the Monarchs (19-7, 10-5 Sun Belt) began the third period with 10 consecutiv­e points and outscored the Mountainee­rs 28-12 in it. ODU beat App State for the second time this season.

Brenda Fontana and En’Dya Buford scored 17 points each for ODU, and Simone Cunningham had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

App State, led by Emily Carver’s 14 points, fell to 14-13, 7-8.

It was a key victory in ODU’s quest for a top-four seed, which would provide a bye into the Sun Belt quarterfin­als. The Monarchs moved a game ahead of Georgia State (15-11, 9-6) for the fourth spot and stayed a game ahead of UL Monroe.

George Mason 71, No. 16 Dayton

67: Freshman Baraka Okojie scored all of his season-high 19 points in the second half, and George Mason rallied past No. 16 Dayton for its first home victory over an AP Top 25 foe in program history.

Keyshawn Hall added 17 points for the Patriots (18-8, 7-6 Atlantic 10), who trailed 40-29 early in the second half before their physical defense keyed a 24-2 run.

DaRon Holmes II scored 26 points for Dayton (21-5, 11-3), all of whose A-10 losses have come in Virginia; the Flyers also fell at Richmond and VCU. Dayton fell a half-game behind A-10 co-leaders Richmond and Loyola Chicago.

Richmond 85, Rhode Island 77: Jordan King’s 25 points and seven assists helped the visiting Spiders (19-7, 11-2) beat the Rams. James Madison 84, Marshall 58: The Dukes (25-3, 13-3 Sun Belt) won their seventh game in a row and set a school record with their 25th victory of the season, pulling away from the Thundering Herd (12-16, 7-8) in the second half in Huntington, West Virginia.

Noah Freidel had 19 points and nine rebounds for JMU. Longwood 80, UNC Asheville

76: Walyn Napper had 16 points, five rebounds, seven assists and four steals for the Lancers (17-11, 5-8 Big South) in Farmville, while Virginia Beach’s Michael Christmas was 3 of 6 from 3-point range on his way to 13 points.

East Tennessee State 82, VMI 69: Ebby Asamoah’s 21 points and five rebounds led the host Buccaneers (14-14, 6-9 Southern Conference). Taeshaud Jackson’s 18 points and 11 rebounds led the Keydets (4-24, 1-14).

ACC

No. 8 Duke 84, Miami 55:

Jeremy Roach scored 16 points to lead Duke to its fifth straight win. Kyle Filipowski and Mark Mitchell each had 15 points for the visiting Blue Devils (21-5, 12-3), who have won 16 of 18.

Clemson 81, Georgia Tech 57: Ian Schieffeli­n had 19 points, and Clemson (18-8, 8-7 ACC) made a season-high 14 3-pointers in Atlanta.

Notre Dame 72, Louisville 50: Freshman Braeden Shrewsberr­y scored 23 points, including a career-high seven 3-pointers, as the visiting Irish (10-16, 5-10 ACC) beat the Cardinals (8-19, 3-13).

TOP 25

No. 7 Marquette 105, DePaul

71: Tyler Kolek had a school-record 18 assists, Kam Jones scored a career-high 34 points and Marquette (20-6, 11-4 Big East) bounced back from its most-lopsided loss of the season to rout DePaul (3-23, 0-15) in Milwaukee.

Penn State 90, No. 12 Illinois 89: Zach Hicks made three free throws after being fouled on a 3-pointer with three seconds left to give Penn State (13-14, 7-9 Big Ten) a win.

Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 35 points for Illinois (19-7, 10-5).

No. 13 Alabama 98, No. 24 Florida 93 (OT): Grant Nelson had 22 points, eight rebounds and six blocks for Alabama (19-7, 11-2 SEC), which started fast against Florida (18-8, 8-5) in overtime in Tuscaloosa. LSU 75, No. 17 Kentucky 74:

Tyrell Ward capped a 17-point performanc­e with a short floater as time expired, and LSU (14-12, 6-7 SEC) knocked off Kentucky (18-8, 8-5).

New Mexico 68, No. 22 Colorado State 66: With the Lobos (21-6, 9-5 Mountain West) trailing by one, Donovan Dent drove the length of the court to lay in the winning shot and draw a foul with 2.8 seconds to play in Albuquerqu­e.

MILITARY

Navy 69, Loyola Maryland 62:

Austin Benigni had 27 points in Baltimore as the Midshipmen (9-17, 5-10 Patriot League) ended an eight-game slide.

Lehigh 85, Army 54: Tyler Whitney-Sidney scored 22 points for the visiting Mountain Hawks (11-15, 8-7 Patriot League). Abe Johnson, Josh Scovens and Jorn Everson scored eight points each for the Black Knights (10-18, 6-9).

UNLV 72, Air Force 43: Rob Whaley Jr. scored 15 points for the Runnin’ Rebels (15-10, 8-5 Mountain West), who held the Falcons (8-17, 1-12) to just 19 second-half points. Ethan Taylor scored 17 for Air Force.

WOMEN

CCBC Catonsvill­e 72, Bryant

& Stratton 55: The Community College of Baltimore County Catonsvill­e (19-4) ended Bryant & Stratton’s winning streak at 19 games, registerin­g a 72-55 victory in Maryland. BSC (23-2) got 14 points from Jaelyn Brown and 13 from Latanya Berry. No. 5 Texas 77, Texas Tech 72:

Amina Muhammad had 16 points and a career-best 15 rebounds in Austin to help Texas (25-3, 12-3 Big 12) to its seventh straight win.

No. 10 Kansas State 73, No. 22 West Virginia 64 (OT): Ayoka Lee scored 34 points for the Wildcats (23-4, 12-3 Big 12) in a win over WVU (22-4, 11-4) in Manhattan, Kansas.
