VWU stuns No. 7 Guilford, makes semis

Virginia Wesleyan got hot at the right time Thursday night, sinking 10 3-pointers to upend nationally ranked Guilford 67-60 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference quarterfin­al at Salem Civic Center.

Khai Seargeant had 16 points, seven assists and four rebounds for VWU, while Jordan Crump had 15 points and five rebounds and Paul Anderson had 14 points.

By beating the thirdseede­d Quakers (22-4), the sixth-seeded Marlins (19-7) moved into today’s 3 p.m. semifinal against Hampden-Sydney in Salem.

VWU shot 50%, including 10 of 23 from 3-point range, and held Quakers to 35.6% shooting.

Hampton 70, Campbell

66: Jordan Nesbitt had 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Pirates (7-21, 2-13) outlasted Campbell (12-16, 6-9) in Buies Creek, North Carolina, in a clash of two of the CAA’s newest members.

Ja’Von Benson grabbed 14 rebounds and scored 10 points for Hampton, while Jerry Deng had 15 points and five rebounds. Tedrick Wilcox Jr. added 14 points as the Pirates avenged an 80-69 home loss Jan. 6 to Campbell. UNC Wilmington 81, William & Mary 65:

Shykeim Phillips scored 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting and KJ Jenkins added 18 as visiting UNC Wilmington handed William & Mary its seventh straight defeat.

No. 3 Purdue 96, Rutgers 68: Zach Edey scored 25 points on near-perfect shooting, Camden Heide added a career-high 18 and the Boilermake­rs (24-3, 13-3 Big Ten) beat the visiting Scarlet Knights (14-12, 6-9). Radford 90, Gardner-Webb 74: Oscar Smith High alum Kenyon Giles had 17 points and DaQuan Smith netted 24 as the Highlander­s (14-14, 4-9 Big South) defeated the Runnin’ Bulldogs (13-15, 8-5) in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. Florida Internatio­nal 76, Liberty 71: Arturo Dean had 24 points for FIU (9-18, 4-8 Conference USA) in Miami. Kaden Metheny led the Flames (16-11, 5-7) with 21 points.

Women

Old Dominion 81, Appalachia­n State 62: The Monarchs (19-7, 10-5 Sun Belt) broke open a close game with a 28-12 advantage in the third quarter at Appalachia­n State (14-13, 7-8).

Brenda Fontana and En’Dya Buford scored 17 points each for ODU, and Simone Cunningham had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

No. 14 Indiana 86, No. 4 Iowa 69: Sara Scalia scored 25 points, All-America center Mackenzie Holmes had 24 points and nine rebounds and host Indiana (22-4, 13-3 Big Ten) frustrated Iowa (23-4, 12-3) and superstar Caitlin Clark, who had 24 points on 8-of26 shooting.

No. 1 South Carolina 72, Alabama 44: Ashlyn Watkins had 14 points and 10 rebounds as host South Carolina (26-0, 13-0) claimed a share of its third straight SEC regular-season title in coach Dawn Staley’s 600th career win.

No. 2 Ohio State 82, Penn State 69: Jacy Sheldon scored 20 points as Ohio State (23-3, 14-1 Big Ten) won its 14th straight game.

North Carolina 80, No. 6 N.C. State 70: Lexi Donarski scored 23 points to power the Tar Heels (18-9, 10-5 ACC) in Chapel Hill.

Virginia 77, Miami 60: UVA (13-13, 5-10 ACC) scored the final 14 points of the game, and four Cavaliers finished in double figures against the Hurricanes (16-10, 6-9) at John Paul Jones Arena.
