Grassfield girls look to defend crown

Rambo gives Grizzlies a good chance for second consecutiv­e Class 6 championsh­ip

Here’s a look at the VHSL indoor track and field championsh­ips, which start today in most classes.

Class 6

When: Today at 11 a.m.; Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Where: Virginia Beach Sports Center

The buzz: Western Branch’s boys won the Class 6 Region A title. The Bruins were led by Micah Hinton and Antonio Smith in the hurdles, sprints and jumps. Grassfield sophomore Sophie Rambo gives the Grizzlies a great chance to repeat their state title. She has the state’s fastest time this season in both the 300 (38.41) and 500 meters (1:13.56). She also won the 55 meters at the region meet. Oscar Smith sophomore Shakayla Lavender has the state’s best time this season in the 55-meter hurdles (7.92). Oscar Smith has the fastest time in the state — and the third-fastest time ever nationally by high school boys in the event — this season in the 4×200 (1:26.01).

Class 5

When: Today at 11 a.m.; Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Where: Virginia Beach Sports Center

The buzz: Bayside senior Andrew Salvodon will compete in both the 300 and 500. He has the fastest time in the state this season in the 500 (1:03.44). Indian River senior Brianna Selby, who signed with Southern California and has an NIL deal with New Balance, will compete in the 55 and 300. She has the fastest time in the state this season in the 55 meters at 6.78. Deep Creek freshman Destini Gatling is the favorite in the high jump, having cleared 5 feet, 8 inches. Teammate Camlin Demakas is the favorite in the 300. Watch for Princess Anne senior Armaan Chopra, who has run 4:15.61 in the 1,600. Kellam senior Jane Phillips, who won the Class 5 cross country title, will be a favorite in the 1,000 and 1,600. Maury’s Jhourni Eason is the favorite in the 55 meters, and Hickory’s Kerrigan Kimener is the favorite in the girls pole vault.

Class 4

When: Today and Tuesday Where: Liberty University Indoor Track Complex in Lynchburg

The buzz: Manor’s Yowome Ayim is the favorite in the girls triple jump. Warhill senior Josh Martin is the favorite in the boys 500 meters.

Class 3

When: Today and Tuesday Where: Liberty University Indoor Track Complex in Lynchburg

The buzz: Heritage senior Sterling Anderson is the favorite in the boys 55 hurdles. New Kent junior Ryan Wright is the favorite in the boys pole vault.

Class 2

When: Wednesday and Thursday

Where: Liberty University Indoor Track Complex in Lynchburg

The buzz: Poquoson sophomore Elizabeth Trant has the best times in the state this season in the 1,000 (3:01.00), 1,600 (5:03.83) and 3,200 (10:49.09). Bruton junior Angie Schmidt is the favorite in the 300.
