James R. "Jimmy" Cochran

NEWPORT NEWS - James R. Cochran (Jimmy) died Sunday, February 25, 2024. He is preceded in death by his parents, Patricia Hanna Cochran and Dr. James R. Cochran; sister, Patricia James Cochran; and uncles, Rev. Don Michael Hanna, and John Alexander Hanna, Jr (Kathryn Hanna). He is survived by his daughters Kelsey Marie Cochran and Jeanenne Nichole Cochran; his grandson Jacob Sweatman; his sisters, Michele Agnes Cochran (Ben Weeks), Deirdre Moira Cochran, and Brigid Cochran-Parado (Randy); brother-in-law, Judd Barton; nephew, Michael Parado; niece, Hanna Parado; his dog Boatswain ("Boson"), as well as multiple cousins and close friends. Jim graduated from Warwick High School and the Newport News Shipyard Apprentice School. He was a member of the Apprentice Alumni Associatio­n and had served as president (2016-2017). He also actively participat­ed in Habitat for Humanity for many years. Some of his hobbies included winning bullets in sailboat racing, golfing best ball with good friends, boating on the James River, and socializin­g out in town. While he was always good for a laugh, some good smack-talk, and a dose of heckling, Jim truly lit up the room with his infectious joy, generous spirit, mischievou­s grin, and a good word of appreciati­on. He will be remembered most for his determinat­ion, strong work ethic, thoughtful­ness, and a keen ability to make others feel like family.

The viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2024 at Amory Funeral Home in Yorktown. The funeral liturgy will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2024 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Newport News, with reception following at Warwick Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Associatio­n, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23508-5216. Arrangemen­ts by Amory Funeral Home, Yorktown.
