Young’s buzzer-beater puts O. Smith in semis

Boys basketball VHSL TOURNAMENT­S Class 6 quarterfin­als Oscar Smith 57, West Potomac 56:

Ulysses Young drove to the basket and hit a short jumper in the lane with seven-tenths of a second left as the Tigers rallied for a road victory on Tuesday night.

West Potomac led 56-53 with 37 seconds left, but Oscar Smith scored the game’s final four points. Young’s game-winner came after the Tigers inbounded the ball with 14.2 seconds remaining after a timeout.

Oscar Smith’s Na’Rod Jarvis finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Jacobi Harper chipped in 11 points.

The Tigers visit Patriot, of Gainesvill­e, for a semifinal Friday.

The winning streak of the host Eagles (21-5) ended at 17 games with a home loss to the Hawks (22-7) of Northern Virginia.

Hayfield 58, Landstown 53: Class 5 quarterfin­als Woodside 75, Kempsville 54:

The defending champion Wolverines pulled away in the second half from the Chiefs in Newport News, earning a semifinal spot against Green Run.

Silas Barksdale had 21 points and 20 rebounds for Woodside, Travis Hamilton had 14 points, six assists and four steals and Jordyn Houston had 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Wolverines outscored Kempsville 15-4 in the fourth quarter.

Class 4 quarterfin­als Hampton 68, Dinwiddie 54:

The Crabbers’ Malik Johnson scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Troy Fullwood added 11 points as Hampton beat the Generals in Heritage’s gym in Newport News. Damarion Grant scored 18 points for Dinwiddie. Hampton earned a semifinal berth against two-time defending champion Varina.

The Truckers fell behind 18-11 in the first quarter, but kept the game competitiv­e in Highland Springs’ gym. They finished 18-9.

Varina 71, Churchland 61: Class 3 quarterfin­als Lake Taylor 56, Meridian 36:

Rodney Baines’ 18 points paced the Titans, and he finished with nine rebounds. Elijah Washington added seven points, 15 rebounds and four blocks, and Triston Skipwith (10 points) and Aaron Elliott (eight points, seven assists) also contribute­d in a victory over the Mustangs from Falls Church. Lake Taylor next will face James Monroe, a 91-67 winner over Booker T. Washington.

Class 2 quarterfin­als Bruton 54, Luray 50:

Brandon Freeman (17 points, six rebounds, five assists) and Kareem Davis (10 points, five rebounds) led the Panthers to a road victory over the Bulldogs in the Shenandoah Valley. Freeman scored the clinching basket.

Luray, which rallied from a 29-20 halftime deficit, had a chance to tie the game, but turned the ball over with 8.9 seconds left. The Panthers will face a defending champion John Marshall team that beat them 94-50 in the Region A final.

VISAA TOURNAMENT­S Division I first round Catholic 73, Trinity Episcopal 59:

Brayden Thorne led the Crusaders with 18 points and Ashton Walker added 17 points and seven rebounds as they beat the Titans of Richmond. Alex Pissis finished with 15 points and 11 boards and Josiah Rickards added 16 points.

Division IV first round Williamsbu­rg Christian 87, Denbigh Baptist 70:

Legend Bunch led the way with 27 points, while Jack Marlowe added 22 and Jordan Sheppard added 19 for the Eagles.

Girls basketball VHSL TOURNAMENT­S Deep Creek 49, Norview 47:

Asia Keels finished with 23 points and Alaya Monroe added 12 as the Hornets (23-3) edged the host Pilots to reach a state semifinal against Princess Anne on Friday.

Class 4 quarterfin­als Hampton 62, Chancellor 49:

The defending champion Crabbers (23-3) took an 18-4 first-quarter lead and defeated the Fredericks­burg-area Chargers (24-4) in Heritage’s gym to reach a semifinal against Monacan.

The Eagles’ Maddie Leach scored 19 points, but Jamestown (22-2) saw its season end in Chesterfie­ld County.

Monacan 66, Jamestown 50: Class 3 quarterfin­als Lake Taylor 56, Brentsvill­e District 49:

La’Mari Budd finished with 17 points, six assists and five steals to lead the Titans to a victory in Nokesville. Tanaya Baxter (10 points, 18 rebounds) and Eternity Washington (10 points, 11 rebounds) had double-doubles.

The Mustangs (21-5) dominated the fourth quarter in James City County after trailing for most of the first three. The Rams (17-9) led 21-16 at halftime and 32-28 after three quarters.

Meridian 52, Lafayette 41: VISAA TOURNAMENT Division II first round Hampton Roads 46, Isle of Wight 26:

Kenzie Cooper had 18 points and 17 rebounds in Newport News to lead the seventh-seeded Navigators.
