11-run fifth inning gives NSU big comeback win

The host Norfolk State Spartans erased a seven-run deficit Friday with an 11-run fifth inning and held on to defeat Saint Peter’s 12-9 in the opener of a weekend series.

Sean Bell and Jalan Jones scored on wild pitches for NSU (3-6), Jamal Ritter and Kydese Queen drew basesloade­d walks, Bell and Cam Mazell hit RBI singles, Camrin Sturgeon hit a sacrifice fly, Jones hit a three-run double and Queen knocked an RBI double.

Dalton Barham (2-1) gave up eight earned runs in five innings but got the victory against the Peacocks (2-7) of Jersey City, New Jersey. Ian Salters, Ethan Blakeney and Nolan Manzer didn’t yield an earned run in four innings of relief.

No. 13 Virginia 4, Massachuse­tts 3 (10 innings):

Western Branch High graduate Harrison Didawick scored from second base on Henry Godbout’s single to right in the 10th in Charlottes­ville, keeping the Cavaliers (9-0) undefeated. Didawick’s bases-loaded walk in the fourth brought home the game’s first run.

UMass (1-4) went ahead 3-2 with a three-run sixth capped by Mike Gervasi’s two-run homer. Godbout scored in the ninth on Bobby Whalen’s sacrifice fly to center to tie the game at 3.

Virginia Tech 6, Stony Brook 3:

The Hokies (7-2) won a series opener over the CAA’s Seawolves (3-6) in Blacksburg as freshman winner Brett Renfrow (3-0) struck out seven and walked none in six innings. Chris Cannizzaro was 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI for the Hokies. Ben Watson’s two-run double in the eighth expanded the lead to 6-3.

William & Mary 8, Central Connecticu­t State 3:

The Tribe opened the Central Virginia Classic with a victory at Plumeri Park, spoiling the Blue Devils’ season opener and extending W&M’s winning streak to eight. Jerry Barnes III and Joe Delossanto­s each were 3 for 5 and scored twice. Henry Jackson and Trey Christman had two hits apiece and combined for three RBIs.

Alex Markus, winner Brendan Kelly and Owen Pierce combined to pitch 8 ⅓ shutout innings.

Charlotte 4, Old Dominion 2:

Cole Reynolds combined with three relievers on a two-hitter and Johnny Sutryk hit a three-run homer as Charlotte won the first game of a weekend series at Bud Metheny Stadium.

The Monarchs (5-4) were coming off a victory over No. 11 East Carolina, but only Kyle Edwards and Jake Ticer were able to get hits against the 49ers (6-4).

Reynolds (1-1) gave up a run on two hits in five innings, striking out nine and walking one. Ryan Degges, AJ Wilson and Tony Rossi combined for five hitless innings to close it out, with Rossi getting his third save.

Sutryk’s homer in the fourth gave Charlotte a 4-0 lead. The Monarchs scored both of their runs in the sixth when Luke Waters hit a sacrifice fly and Edwards scored on a throwing error.

The teams are set to play again at 2 p.m. today.

VirginiaWe­sleyan6-5,Southern Virginia 3-2:

The Marlins (6-5) swept a home nonconfere­nce doublehead­er against the Knights (1-4).

In Game 1, Micah Fox was 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI, Michael Burton Jr. was 2 for 3 and scorted twice, Keegan Megaro was 1 for 1 with an RBI and a run, and Josh Goodrich was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run. Ian Brady (2-1) struck out four in four innings, and Sal Lettieri, Edgar Harwood and Ryan Cowell each pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

In Game 2, Jack McDowell (1-1) struck out five and gave up two runs in 4 ⅔ innings for the victory. Thomas Crandall had three hits, Chris Mitchell Jr. had two hits, a run and two RBIs, and Clay Clarke, Samuel Kasprow and Nathan Bryant each had a hit and scored.
