Old Dominion shuts out Charlotte
Monarchs win home series, improve to 7-4
Old Dominion (7-4) beat Charlotte 3-0 Saturday to finish with two victories in their three-game series in Norfolk.
Trent Buchanan, Hutson Trobaugh (1-0), Kellen Davis, Ben Moore and Bailey Matela combined to shut out the 49ers (6-6) with 11 strikeouts. Kenny Levari homered and Kyle Edwards and Jake Ticer also had RBIs.
Sacred Heart 6, William & Mary 5:
The Tribe (8-3) led 5-0 but surrendered a comeback to the Pioneers (1-8) at Plumeri Park. Michael Simo’s RBI double broke a tie in the ninth.
W&M starter Zack Potts pitched five innings, yielding four hits and two unearned runs. Reliever Mark Hindy (2-1) took the loss.
Saint Peter’s 9, Norfolk State 6:
The Peacocks (4-7) won the series 2-1 over the host Spartans (3-8) as Tyler Smith was 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI. The Jersey City squad scored nine unanswered runs to go ahead 9-2 in the eighth.
Manny Jackson had two hits and three RBIs for NSU, and
Jamal Ritter scored twice.
No. 13 Virginia 10, Massachusetts 6:
The Cavaliers (10-1) registered their second win in the threegame series nagainst the Minutemen (2-5) in Charlottesville as starter Jay Woolfolk gave up just one run in six innings. Henry Godbout and Henry Ford each homered and drove in three runs.
Methodist 12, Christopher Newport 11 (10 innings):
The Captains (8-3), ranked 15th in Division III, led 10-3 after 5 ½ innings, but the Monarchs (5-4) came back for a home win in the Armstrong Invitational in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
CNU had 14 hits, including 13 singles, but committed six errors. Methodist’s Kuhn hit a walk-off RBI single off Christian Williams.
CNU’s Doc Daniels was 3 for 5 with two runs and four RBIs. Scott Crosson was 3 for 5 with three runs.
Stony Brook 4, Virginia Tech 3:
Defensive mistakes cost the Hokies (8-3) early in Blacksburg, and the Seawolves (4-7) completed a victory despite yielding two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Reliever Quinlan Montgomery induced a doubleplay grounder by Christian Martin to end the game. Tech’s Griffin Stieg pitched 5 ⅔ scoreless innings.
Late Saturday Christopher Newport 4, Wittenberg 0:
Brandon Cassedy (3-0) became only the third CNU pitcher ever to strike out 16 batters in a game, throwing eight innings and combining with two relievers for a shutout. Scott Crosson broke a tie in the fifth with a single that scored Gus Croll.
Virginia Tech 11, Stony Brook 5:
Chris Cannizzaro, Eddie Micheletti Jr. and Sam Tackett combined to bat 8 for 13, score six runs and account for seven RBIs from the Hokies’ third through fifth spots in the order.
Boston College 9, William & Mary 7:
The Eagles ended an eightgame winning streak of the Tribe by overcoming a 6-2 deficit in a Central Virginia Classic game before 506 at Plumeri Park. W&M lost despite a second-inning grand slam by Ben Parker. Henry Jackson and Kevin Francella each had two hits and a run for the Tribe.
Saint Peter’s 16, Norfolk State 14:
The host Spartans were one strike from victory but lost a 29-hit slugfest to the Peacocks, who scored five runs in the ninth to erase a 12-11 deficit. A two-out basesloaded walk on a 3-2 pitch tied the score at 12, and Tyler Smith clubbed a go-ahead grand slam.
