Admirals push their streak to five straight

- Staff reports

Rebranded as a Chesapeake team for a City Series weekend, the Norfolk Admirals extended their winning streak to five by beating Maine 7-3 Saturday night, giving them a two-game sweep of the Mariners.

A crowd of 6,694, one of the largest at Scope in the revitalized

Admirals’ ECHL season, saw the Admirals go ahead by seven goals. Darick Louis-Jean, named the night’s No. 1 star, scored two. Kamerin Nault, the No. 2 star, had a goal and two assists. Mark Liwiski, the No. 3 star, had a goal and an assist.

Veteran Mathieu Roy opened the scoring 11:14 into the game, and Nault followed with a powerplay goal at 13:29 for a 2-0 lead. With the Boston Bruins-affiliated Mariners on a power play, Gehrett Sargis sent the crowd into a frenzy with a short-handed goal for a 3-0 lead at 19:25.

Both of Louis-Jean’s goals came in the second period, along with scores by Liwiski and Carson Musser. Chesapeake native Brandon Osmundson got an assist on Louis-Jean’s second goal, after which Maine’s Austin Albrecht and the Admirals’ Connor Fedorek fought.

It was 7-0 before Maine ended the shutout at 19:27 of the second on Wyllum Deveaux’s goal. The Mariners’ Jimmy Lambert and

Chase Zieky scored in the final period, but it was much too late for Maine (22-25-6-0).

Oskari Salminen made 19 saves for the victory. Mariners goalie Shane Starrett had 24 saves but took the loss.

The Admirals (32-19-3-1), safely in second place in the Eastern Conference’s North Division and now just five points behind front-running Adirondack, will return to Scope ice at 6:05 p.m. Saturday against the fourth-place Reading Royals.
