Kitley injured as UVA stuns No. 5 Hokies

Freshman Kymora Johnson had 21 points and eight assists as Virginia upended No. 5 Virginia Tech 80-75 Sunday before 11,975 fans, a John Paul Jones Arena record for women’s basketball.

Georgia Amoore had 39 points for the Hokies (23-6, 14-4), who already had clinched the ACC Tournament’s top seed but have a two-game losing streak.

Two-time ACC Player of the Year Liz Kitley, who had 20 points, nine rebounds and four blocks for Tech, left the game with 6:05 left in the third quarter after being fouled while making a layup. Kitley’s basket with 6:05 left in the period pulled Tech even at 41, but she was fouled by Taylor Lauterbach and hit the floor. She headed into the visitors tunnel with medical staff. Hokies’ bench with 30 seconds left in the period to raucous applause from the sizable Hokies contingent but didn’t return to the game.

Camryn Taylor had 17 points and seven rebounds for UVA (15-14, 7-11), and Paris Clark had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists.

College of Charleston 77, William & Mary 72:

Despite 32 points and 10 rebounds from Nylah Young, the Tribe (15-12, 11-5 Coastal Athletic Associatio­n) yielded to a fourth-quarter comeback by the Cougars (19-8, 11-5) in South Carolina. With two games left, Charleston owns the head-tohead tiebreaker in its race with W&M for a top-four seed and accompanyi­ng quarterfin­al spot in the conference tournament.

Cassidy Geddes had 12 points and five rebounds and Rebekah Frisby-Smith had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five steals for W&M.

Jenna Annecchiar­ico had 21 points and six assists for Charleston. W&M went ahead 72-70 at the 1:42 mark on two Young free throws, but Annecchiar­ico made a jumper, layup and two foul shots to give Charleston a 76-72 lead with 14 seconds to go.

Northeaste­rn 64, Hampton 60:

The Pirates (3-23, 3-13 CAA) led much of the game in Boston but didn’t score in the last 3:40 in a loss to the Huskies (9-16, 5-10). Deja Bristol’s two free throws with 3:22 to go put Northeaste­rn ahead 62-60.

Cheyenne Talbot had 15 points, Amyah Reaves 11 and Le’Asia Foreman 10 for Hampton. Derin Erdogan led Northeaste­rn with 25.

No. 9 LSU 77, Kentucky 56:

Angel Reese had 22 points and 14 rebounds in what might have been her final regular-season game for the host Tigers.

No. 12 N.C. State 75, Wake Forest 57:

Saniya Rivers scored 23 points, Mimi Collins added 18 points and nine rebounds and the host Wolfpack (25-5, 13-5) took the No. 2 ACC Tournament seed. Virginia Beach’s Aziaha James had 12 points and seven rebounds for N.C. State, which finished the game by outscoring the Demon Deacons 27-7.

No. 17 Notre Dame 74, No. 22 Louisville 58:

Hannah Hidalgo scored 18 of her 26 points in the second half for the host Irish (23-6, 13-5), who took the ACC’s fourth seed. The Cardinals (23-8, 12-6) got the fifth seed.
