Old Dominion’s Jenkins repeats as All-Sun Belt second-team pick

Old Dominion combo guard and Newport News native Chaunce Jenkins was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference second team for a second straight season, the league announced Monday.

The 6-foot-4 Jenkins leads the Monarchs in scoring (16.2 points per game), assists (79), 3-pointers made (46), field goals made (162), free throws made (117) and free throws attempted (161). He has had 10 games of 20 or more points, including a career-high 27 at Arkansas State.

Guard Terrence Edwards Jr. of James Madison was named the conference Player of the Year. Appalachia­n State’s Dustin Kerns was named Coach of the Year.

In the league, Jenkins was fourth in scoring and 11th in fieldgoal percentage. During conference play, the former Menchville High star was fourth in scoring and 13th in field-goal percentage.

ODU (7-24) opens Sun Belt Tournament play on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. EST as the No. 14 seed against 11th-seeded Texas State. The game is on ESPN+ and can be heard on the ODU Sports Radio Network.

Edwards has averaged 17.6 points per game and was a huge factor as the Dukes set a school record with 28 wins and counting.

JMU forward T.J. Bickerstaf­f was selected as the Newcomer of the Year and to the second team. Dukes guard Noah Freidel made the third team.

Top-seeded Appalachia­n State provided the Defensive Player of the Year (center Justin Abson) and Coach of the Year (Dustin Kerns), as well as first-teamers Donovan Gregory and Tre’Von Spillers.

A-10 honors Spiders’ King: The Atlantic 10 named Richmond graduate student Jordan King its Player of the Week.

King scored 27 points in each of the first-place Spiders’ two wins last week, while shooting 51.6% (16 of 31) from the field and 60% (12 of 20) from 3-point range. He added seven assists, six rebounds and five steals in the two wins, and connected on 10 of 12 free throws.

ODU’s Clark, Buford gain Sun Belt

awards: Old Dominion’s Kaye Clark was voted the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year, and teammate En’Dya Buford earned All-Sun Belt third-team honors Monday.

Clark repeated as the conference leader in steals and steals per game. She finished the regular season ranked eighth in the country in steals (87) and 12th in steals per game (3.0). In conference play, she collected 54 steals (3.0 per game).

Her effort has helped the Monarchs (21-8, 12-6) rank 15th nationally in turnovers forced per game (20.86), 25th in turnover margin (4.59) and 3-point percentage defense (.271), and 28th in steals per game (10.7).

Buford, a Memphis, Tennessee, native who transferre­d to ODU from Jones Junior College, is the leading scorer for the Monarchs with 12.4 points per game. She finished second in the league behind Clark with 69 steals and 2.38 per game. Her season totals include 360 points, 136 rebounds (4.7 per game) and a team-high 40 3-point baskets.

The Monarchs are seeded fourth in this week’s conference tournament. Third-seeded James

Madison players Peyton McDaniel (14.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and Kseniia Kozlova (12 ppg, 7.3 rpg) were voted to the second team.

Hokies drop to 11th: Virginia Tech (23-6) fell six spots to No. 11 in the new AP poll, thanks to losses at now-No. 14 Notre Dame and Virginia. The Hokies still are seeded No. 1 in this week’s ACC Tournament at Greensboro Coliseum, though North Carolina State moved up two spots to No. 10 and passed them in the poll. Also ranked from the ACC are No. 20 Syracuse and No. 24 Louisville, though they dropped one and two spots, respective­ly.

Fairfield (26-1), the only team besides unbeaten No. 1 South Carolina with so few losses, debuted in the poll at No. 25. The Stags replaced West Virginia, a team led by Lake Taylor High graduate JJ Quinerly.

Stanford climbed to second, while Caitlin Clark and Iowa went to third by beating Big Ten champion Ohio State, which fell to fourth.

Bryant & Stratton coach, players honored: Bryant & Stratton’s Cornel Parker was named the National Junior College Athletic Associatio­n Region 10 women’s Coach of the Year after guiding the Bobcats to a 25-3 regular season.

His players also gained all-region honors: Latanya Berry on the first team, Jaelyn Brown on the second team, Rakyla Jones on the third team and Liv Bodenheime­r on the All-Academic team.

The Bobcats are seeded No. 1 in the Region 10 Division II tourney and will play a quarterfin­al at noon Thursday at Brunswick Community College against an opponent to be named.
