Wheeler gets new deal; Devils fire Ruff as coach

Zack Wheeler and the Phillies agreed Monday to a three-year, $126 million deal for 2025-27 that has the fourth-highest average salary in baseball history at $42 million.

The Phillies’ 33-yearold ace gets $23.5 million in 2024, the final season of a five-year, $118 million agreement.

Wheeler’s average salary trails only Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani ($70 million), Rangers pitcher Max Scherzer ($43.33 million) and Astros pitcher Justin Verlander ($43.33 million), the latter two who signed their deals with the Mets.

Josh Donaldson, who won the AL MVP in 2015 with the Blue Jays, retired after 13 seasons. Donaldson, 38, finishes his career with 279 home runs and 1,310 hits.

NBA: Cavaliers All-Star G Donovan Mitchell will miss at least three more games after treatment for a bone bruise in his left knee.

Mitchell, 27, has missed the last two games . ... Clippers G Russell Westbrook, 35, underwent surgery on his broken non-shooting and he hopes to return for the playoffs, ESPN reported . ... The Raptors signed 32-year-old center Kelly Olynyk to a two-year, $26.25 million extension.

NFL: WR Mike Evans agreed to a two-year, $52 million contract with $35 million guaranteed to remain with the Buccaneers instead of testing free agency. Evans, 30, is the only NFL player to begin his career with 10 consecutiv­e seasons with 1,000-plus yards receiving. He’s the Bucs’ career leader in receptions, yardage and TDs.

NHL: The Devils fired coach Lindy Ruff and named assistant Travis Green as the interim replacemen­t for the rest of the season. Ruff, 64, was in his fourth season with the club. The Devils are near the bottom of the Eastern Conference with 64 points.
