Big fourth quarter lifts Wake past UVA

Elise Williams had 25 points and nine rebounds and No. 14 seed Wake Forest overcame an 11-point deficit heading into the fourth quarter to eliminate No. 11 seed Virginia 58-55 in the first round of the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament on Wednesday night in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Cavaliers perhaps saw their season come to an end at 15-15.

The Demon Deacons (7-24) outscored UVA 23-9 in the fourth quarter after trailing by as many as 15 points in the third quarter and 46-35 at the end of the period.

Williams went 12 of 14 at the line and Wake Forest finished 17 of 21 for 81%. UVA went 2 of 4 from the line.

Camryn Taylor paced the Cavaliers with 15 points and Kymora Johnson had 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Wake Forest will face No. 6 seed Florida State at 7:30 p.m. today in the second round.

More ACC tourney Boston College 85, Clemson 72:

T’yana Todd scored a career-high 24 points and made five 3-pointers, Teya Sidberry had 20 points and 10 rebounds and No. 13 seed Boston College beat No. 12 seed Clemson in the tournament’s opening game.

Boston College (14-18), which has won three straight following a 10-game losing streak in ACC play, moves on to play 24th-ranked Louisville in the second round today. The Eagles lost both regular-season meetings with the Cardinals, including a 69-67 contest at home on Feb. 15.

Clemson (12-19) suffered its first loss in the opening round under coach Amanda Butler in her six seasons.

Georgia Tech 73, Pittsburgh 60:

Tonie Morgan had 24 points and 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season, Kara Dunn added 14 points and nine rebounds and 10th-seeded Georgia Tech defeated No. 15 seed Pittsburgh.

Georgia Tech (17-14) advances to play No. 7 seed Duke in the second round today. The Yellow Jackets will look to avenge an 84-46 loss at Duke on Jan. 14.

Rusne Augustinai­te was left wide open in the corner, and she sank a 3-pointer to extend Georgia Tech’s lead to 64-58 with 1:49 left. Morgan added a three-point play 42 seconds later for a nine-point lead.

Bella Perkins scored 13 of her 16 points in the first half and Aislin Malcolm also finished with 16 for Pitt (8-24).

Sun Belt tourney Louisiana Monroe 78, Georgia Southern 57:

Jakayla Johnson scored 25 points and Daisha Bradford had a triple-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the No. 5 seed Warhawks.

ULM (19-12) will meet No. 4 seed Old Dominion at 3 p.m. today in a quarterfin­al.

Appalachia­n State 73, Georgia State 68:

Faith Alston collected 36 points on 10-of-15 shooting to lead No. 9 see App State past No. 8 seed Georgia State in a secondroun­d game in Pensacola, Florida.

The Mountainee­rs (17-14) will play top seed Marshall at 12:30 p.m. today in a quarterfin­al.

Southern Miss 70, Coastal Carolina 53:

Domonique Davis scored 19 points and Jacorriah Bracy had 18 points and 10 rebounds as the No. 6 seed Lady Eagles (18-12) ousted the No. 11 Chanticlee­rs.

Southern Miss will play No. 3 seed James Madison at 6 p.m. today in a quarterfin­al.
