Miami women upend UNC, will play Hokies
Lazaria Spearman had 12 points and 10 rebounds and scored the go-ahead points with 2:40 left in the game as ninth-seeded Miami erased a 14-point deficit to beat eighth-seeded North Carolina 60-59 Thursday in the second round of the ACC Tournament at Greensboro Coliseum.
The Hurricanes (19-11) will play top seed Virginia Tech, the nation’s No. 11 team, in today’s quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m.
Shayeann Day-Wilson had 13 points and five assists, Latasha Lattimore had 12 points and Ja’Leah Williams 11, including three 3-pointers. Deja Kelly scored 15 points, though on 6-of20 shooting, and grabbed nine rebounds for the Tar Heels (19-12), who seem highly likely to make the 68-team NCAA field at large. Alyssa Ustby also scored 15.
No. 24 Louisville 58, Boston College 55: Nyla Harris had 14 points and nine rebounds, Olivia Cochran made key steals down the stretch and the fifth-seeded
Cardinals won. Louisville (24-8) advanced to today’s 11 a.m. quarterfinal against 14th-ranked Notre Dame, the No. 4 seed. The teams split the regular-season series.
Louisville’s pressure defense forced BC into six turnovers in the final two minutes. The Eagles didn’t score after T’yana Todd sank a 3-pointer from the corner with 3:41 left for a 55-52 lead. Sydney Taylor intercepted a crosscourt pass and found Harris under the basket to get within 55-54 with 1:18 left.
Duke 70, Georgia Tech 58: Oluchi Okananwa scored 15 points off the bench to lead four Duke double-digit scorers as the Blue Devils (20-10) ousted the Yellow Jackets (17-15). Duke, a likely NCAA Tournament team, will face second-seeded North Carolina State, the nation’s No. 10 team, in today’s 5 p.m. quarterfinal. Kennedy Brown had 14 points and eight rebounds, Ashlon Jackson had 11 points, five rebounds and three assists, and Jadyn Donovan had 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Sun Belt, second round Texas State 75, Southern Mississippi 59:
Dontae Horne scored 20 points as the 11th-seeded Bobcats, who sneaked past Old Dominion in Tuesday’s first round despite trailing for the large majority of regulation time, ousted the sixthseeded Golden Eagles at Pensacola Bay Center.
Texas State (16-17) advanced to meet third-seeded Troy in a quarterfinal at 6 p.m. Eastern Saturday. Victor Hart had 20 points for Southern Miss, which finished 16-16.
Louisiana 80, Coastal Carolina 66:
Kobe Julien had 25 points and five rebounds for the fifth-seeded Ragin’ Cajuns (19-13), who will play No. 4 seed Arkansas State at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Hosana Kitenge added 13 points while shooting 5 of 6 from the field and 3 for 3 from the line while he also had six rebounds.
The 13th-seeded Chanticleers (9-22) were led by Jacob Meyer’s 22 points and Kylan Blackmon’s 17.
Georgia Southern 76, South Alabama 71: Tyren Moore had 18 points for the ninth-seeded Eagles (9-23), who will play top-seeded Appalachian State at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the quarters.
