CAA champion dominates HU women

Much to Hampton University’s detriment, Stony Brook showed why it earned the Coastal Athletic Associatio­n women’s basketball tournament’s top seed.

Led by former Tidewater Conference of Independen­t Schools standout Sherese Pittman’s 15 points, the Seawolves (24-3, 15-2) stifled Hampton 71-35 on Thursday night before 644 at the HU Convocatio­n Center.

Camryn Hill scored 19 points for the Pirates (3-24, 3-14), three more than her teammates’ total combined. HU was 14 of 73 (19.2%) from the field, including 0 for 23 from 3-point range. Hill was 7 of 23, while her teammates were 7 of 50.

Pittman, from Steward School, added 14 rebounds and three assists, weathering seven turnovers. Khari Clark had 13 points and 14 rebounds for Stony Brook, outrebound­ed Hampton 70-35.

HU will complete its regular season with a 4 p.m. home game today against Campbell.

More women Pac-12 quarterfin­als No. 2 Stanford 71, California 57:

Kiki Iriafen scored 28 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for Stanford (27-4) in Las Vegas. The Cardinal erased a 36-28 halftime deficit.

No. 5 Southern California 65, Arizona 62:

JuJu Watkins scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds for USC (24-5) in a Pac-12 quarterfin­al.

No. 7 UCLA 67, No. 22 Utah 57:

Angela Dugalic scored 17 points and Charisma Osborne added 16 for the Bruins (25-5), who outscored the Utes (22-10) in each quarter to gain a semifinal berth against USC.

ACC, second round Florida State 70, Wake Forest 53:

Makayla Timpson had 22 points and 13 rebounds for her school-record 16th double-double of the season, and sixthseede­d FSU (22-9) opened a 20-point halftime lead against the Demon Deacons (7-25) at Greensboro Coliseum.

Junior college Bryant & Stratton 81, Guilford Technical Community College 54:

Latanya Berry had 31 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks as the top-seeded Bobcats rolled to a National Junior College Athletic Associatio­n Region 10 Division II quarterfin­al triumph at Bolivia Community College in Brunswick, North Carolina.

Men Sun Belt, second round Marshall 86, Georgia State 74:

Kamdyn Curfman’s 30 points, five rebounds and three steals led No. 10 seed Marshall (13-19) over the seventhsee­ded Panthers (14-17) in Pensacola, Florida. Kevin Boyles also scored 30 for the Thundering Herd, which will play No. 2 seed James Madison in a quarterfin­al at 8:30 p.m. today.

Patriot League quarterfin­al Boston University 70, Navy 61:

Anthony Morales had 17 points and six rebounds off of the bench for the second-seeded Terriers (16-16), who won at home and will host sixthseede­d Lehigh in a semifinal Sunday. Austin Benigni finished with 22 points for the Midshipmen (12-18).

Regular season No. 5 Arizona 88, UCLA 65:

KJ Lewis scored 18 points, Caleb Love added 17 and the visiting Wildcats (24-6, 15-4) clinched the Pac-12 regular-season title in their final season in the league with a win over the Bruins (14-16, 9-10).

Washington 74, No. 18 Washington State 68:

Koren Johnson scored 23 points, Keion Brooks Jr. added 22 and the visiting Huskies (17-14, 9-11) won the final Pac-12 Conference matchup between the cross-state rivals.
