Norfolk to remain host of MEAC tournament­s through at least ’27

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournament­s will stay in Norfolk through at least 2027, the conference and the city announced in a release Tuesday.

The latest MEAC tournament­s are slated to begin today at Scope.

“This year will mark the 12th occasion the tournament has been hosted in Norfolk, and we look forward to continuing our partnershi­p with the city, showcasing the excitement of the games, and highlighti­ng the fan activities that make this tournament so special,” MEAC commission­er Sonja Stills said in a release. “We are grateful to Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Alexander, his staff and city council members for providing an outstandin­g experience for the MEAC and our fans year in and year out.”

The MEAC tournament­s’ latest stay in Norfolk began in 2013. Norfolk also hosted from 1991-93 and in 1997. The tournament­s also have been held in Richmond, Philadelph­ia, Baltimore, Tallahasse­e, Florida, and various sites in North Carolina: Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Durham, Greensboro and Charlotte.

“Norfolk has proudly served as the host city for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference since 2013 and we look forward to continuing that partnershi­p for the next three years,” Norfolk mayor Kenny Alexander said in the release. “As home to both MEAC and Norfolk State University, Norfolk is the ideal location for this tournament as a distinct and dynamic destinatio­n offering a unique experience for the alumni, student athletes and fans.”

The NSU men and women both have the top seeds this week. The Norfolk State women open the tournament at noon today with a game against eighth-seeded South Carolina State.

The NSU men start today with a 6 p.m. game against No. 8 seed Coppin State.
