Hampton splits pair against Quinnipiac

Hampton (8-18) split two home games with Quinnipiac (9-5) on Wednesday. The Pirates won 13-5 in five innings before losing 3-2 in eight innings to the Bobcats from Hamden, Connecticu­t.

In the opener, the Pirates took a 7-0 lead in the first inning and had a season-high 14 hits. Carmynn Bonner and Taylor Ivey each batted 3 for 4, Aitirihna Aiken was 2 for 2 and Janae Lyles was 2 for 4.

Ivey scored three runs, Aiken drove in three, and Bonner, Lyles and Leah Maduro scored twice each. Taryn Bennett (3-2) pitched 4 ⅔ innings for the victory.

Hampton led 2-0 in Game 2 before yielding an unearned run in the fifth and three hits that led to the tying run in the sixth. Brooke Hilliard’s RBI double in the eighth off reliever Emily Workman was decisive. Bonner and Kylie Hill each scored for the Pirates.

■ Kiyah Garrett doubled, homered and drove in three runs as host Charlotte (13-9) beat No. 12 Virginia Tech 8-4, breaking a 2-2 tie with a six-run fifth. Emma Ritter and Cameron Fagan belted home runs for the Hokies (18-4-1).

■ Bryant & Stratton (17-2) swept Virginia Union 9-6 and 12-3 in Richmond.

In Game 1, Kiara Selby was 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI and Tanisha Halvorson was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run for the Bobcats. Madison McDowell pitched six innings for the victory.

In Game 2, Selby was 3 for 3 with three runs, while Chloe Gust and Kellam High alumna Iyana Betts both were 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. Kallie McNeely was 1 for 2 and scored twice.

Syd Guidi scored six goals as Christophe­r Newport (6-1), ranked 15th in Division III, surged past Widener 18-5 at Jennings Family Stadium in Newport News.

Brookelyn Morrison had six points and caused six turnovers, becoming the first Captain ever with that combinatio­n. Kelsey Widener handed out five assists for CNU, which went ahead to stay early in the second quarter after a 3-3 first period.
