DeMartini’s three homers spark Virginia Tech to 5-1 ACC start

Behind Ocean Lakes High graduate Carson DeMartini’s three home runs and Griffin Stieg’s 7 ⅔ shutdown innings Sunday, Virginia Tech (14-4) put away Louisville 8-1 at Jim Patterson Stadium in Kentucky, achieving the program’s best six-game ACC start to date (5-1). The Cardinals fell to 13-7, 1-2.

DeMartini hammered his third, fourth and fifth home runs of the series, solo shots during the first, third and fourth innings. He hit seven home runs for the week and has 12 for the season.

Stieg gave up one run on five hits, striking out six and walking none.

William & Mary 14, Quinnipiac 6: The Tribe (14-6) finished a three-game sweep at Plumeri Park, going ahead 6-0 in the first inning and answering after the Bobcats (5-11) closed their deficit to 7-6 in the top of the fourth.

Nate Goranson walked threetimes and socked a three-run homer and an RBI single, Luca Trigiani belted a three-run homer and HJenry Jackson was 4 for 4 with three runs and two RBIs. Joe Delossanto­s was 2 for 4 with four runs, two walks and an RBI.

Mark Hindy held Quinnipiac to one hit in three innings of relief, and Owen Pierce gained his third save of the season with three hitless innings, striking out five.

No. 17 Virginia 11, No. 7 Wake Forest 10: Led by Western Branch High graduate Harrison Didawick, the Cavaliers, who trailed 10-6 at the seventh-inning stretch, edged the Demon Deacons to take the series 2-1 at Disharoon Park in Charlottes­ville.

Didawick hit a three-run homer to right in the eighth to cut Wake’s lead to 10-9, and Casey Saucke’s solo homer with two out in the ninth forced extra innings. Didawick scored the winning run, his third run of the day, as Cox High graduate Ethan Anderson reached base on a one-out error by Wake pitcher David Falco in the ninth.

Norfolk State 9, Maryland Eastern Shore 4: The Spartans (7-11, 4-2) completed a three-game Northeast Conference sweep of the Hawks (0-14, 0-3) in Princess Anne, Maryland.

NSU fell behind 3-0 in the first inning but bounced back behind of pair of two-run homers from Collin Curry and two solo home runs and a two-run single from Justin Journette.

Joe Lafave (1-3) got the victory by striking out eight in 5 ⅓ innings. Parker Hampton pitched 3 ⅔ innings of shutout relief to finish the game.

Georgia Southern 2, Old Dominion 1: The Eagles (9-10, 1-2 Sun Belt) salvaged one victory in their three-game series versus the Monarchs (12-8, 2-1).

Kenny Levari scored on an error in the second inning for ODU, but Georgia Southern’s Kent Schmidt clubbed a two-run homer off Trent Buchanan (1-1) in the fourth.

Eagles starter Ty Fisher (3-1) held ODU to four hits and one walk in seven innings, and Joey White threw two hitless innings for a save. ODU pitchers Ben Moore, Bailey Matela and Jacob Gomez combined for 7 ⅓ scoreless innings.

Late Saturday

No. 7 Wake Forest 9, No. 17 Virginia 3: The Demon Deacons (13-5, 2-3 ACC) evened their three-game series at UVA (15-4, 2-3) with a victory in the middle game. Wake Forest first baseman Jack Winnay hit two home runs, including a two-run shot in the fifth.

Wake starting pitcher Chase Burns limited the Cavaliers to two hits over seven innings and struck out 13 batters to improve to 4-0 on the year.

Sophomore Henry Godbout tagged Burns for a home run to tie the game at 1 in the second inning. Freshman Antonio Perrotta hit his first college home run as a pinch-hitter in the ninth.

Virginia Wesleyan 17, Eastern Mennonite 11 (Game 2): After losing 11-8 in Game 1 in Harrisonbu­rg, the Marlins (10-7, 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) gained a split with the Royals (4-10, 1-3). VWU outscored EMU 10-0 from the fifth through the seventh innings to overcome a 10-6 deficit and win 17-11.

Clay Clarke was 4 for 2 with two runs and an RBI, Chris Mitchell scored four runs and was 2 for 4, Sylvester had three hits, and Nick Sylvester and Keegan Megaro scored three times each. Winner Tavon Williams, Ryan Cowell and Zach Miller combined to yield just one run and three hits in 4 ⅔ innings of relief.

EMU’s Nick Arnold, a Nansemond River High product, was 3 for 4 with six RBIs and two runs in Game 2, and Ethan Spraker was 4 for 5 with four RBIs and a run.

Apprentice 6, Saint Vincent 5 (Game 2): The Builders won the four-game, two-day series 3-1 at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton by taking its finale.

Caleb Russell was 2 for 2 with three runs, Camden Weston was 2 for 3 with two runs, Riggs Ellis was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Jeremy Harmon was 2 for 3. Dawson Adams pitched 2 ⅓ innings of scoreless relief for the win, and Jaeden Anderson got the final two outs for the save.
