Woman, shot by NC deputy, stable
49-year-old’s condition unknown after Dare County encounter
COLINGTON, N.C. — The 49-year-old woman a Dare County Sheriff’s Office deputy stunned with a Taser, then shot with a gun Sunday night is alive and in stable condition
Angie Grube, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation spokesperson, confirmed the woman was alive in a Wednesday email and said in an afternoon update that “the woman is in stable condition.”
Grube also confirmed that one officer is under investigation.
This is the second time a Dare County Sheriff ’s Office deputy has shot a citizen in just over five months.
The deputy shocked the woman twice in the street, then shot her, a neighbor told WAVY-TV. After being stunned, the woman dropped a knife in the yard before running up the stairs to the porch, which is where the officer shot her, Angel Taylor told WAVY.
She described the shot as not intended to kill.
Taylor said the woman’s boyfriend shared with her and with other neighbors Sunday night that “she’s actually been having a psychotic break for like the past week and a half.”
In the TV interview, Taylor also described the woman fighting medical personnel who were loading her on a stretcher because she didn’t want to go to the hospital.
The person who called 911 at 7:05 p.m. Sunday reported the woman was on their property with a knife and was “acting erratically,” according to a Monday release from the Dare County Sheriff ’s Office.
The encounter took place near the intersection of Lake Court and Harbour Road, according to the release. That area is in the Colington Harbour neighborhood of Colington Island — is an unincorporated part of Dare County.
The release stated that the officer was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation.
The Dare County Sheriff ’s Office has not released the deputy’s name, the woman’s name or responded to a request for other details about the incident — such as how many officers responded or if the deputy is on leave.
Deputy Edward Francis Glaser III fatally shot Sylvester Demetrius Selby on Oct. 2 in a part of Manteo that is also unincorporated Dare County.
A special prosecutor decided Feb. 21 not to pursue charges against Glaser, who remains listed as a sheriff ’s office employee on the county’s website staff directory.
