W. Branch alum drives in 5 as UVA trounces Pitt

Western Branch High graduate Harrison Didawick drove in five runs, homered and doubled as No. 14 Virginia (18-4, 4-3 ACC) hammered Pittsburgh 18-2 Friday in a series opener on the Panthers’ field.

UVA’s Jacob Ference was 4 for 5 with three runs and three RBIs, Griff O’Ferrall was 4 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs, Henry Ford was 2 for 3 with two runs and three RBIs, Anthony Stephan scored three runs and Cox High alum Ethan Anderson had a hit and scored.

UVA pitcher Cullen McKay (2-0) struck out 10 in five innings as Pitt fell to 11-8, 1-6.

William & Mary 6-3, Stony Brook 1-1: The Tribe (17-6, 2-0) began its Coastal Athletic Associatio­n slate with a sweep of the Seawolves (9-12, 0-2) at Plumeri Park.

W&M used a six-run fifth to win Game 1. An RBI hit by Ben Parker put W&M ahead, Nate Goranson was plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded, Luca Trigiani hit a two-run single and Kevin Francella drove in a run with an infield single.

In Game 2, winner Zack Potts gave up just four hits in six innings before Owen Pierce pitched three hitless innings for his fourth save of the season. Both of them struck out four and walked none.

Trigiani and Witt Scafidi each had two hits.

Virginia Tech 9-4, Boston College 6-3: Trailing 6-5 in the opener, the visiting Hokies (17-4) surged for four runs in the ninth to win the opener, then held off the Eagles (11-10) in Game 2.

In the opener, Christian Martin smacked a three-run homer for an 8-6 lead, and Eddie Micheletti doubled home Virginia Beach’s Carson DeMartini with the final run.

David Shoemaker’s three scoreless innings of relief led the Hokies. Clay Grady was 2 for 3 with three runs and an RBI.

In Game 2, Henry Cooke homered, and he, Martin and Ben Watson had two hits each for Virginia Tech. Pitcher Wyatt Parliament improved to 3-0 with six strikeouts in five innings.

Piedmont 5-3, Christophe­r Newport 3-6: The host Captains (12-6), ranked 22nd in Division III, won Game 2 to earn a split against the Lions (12-7) from Demorest, Georgia.

Piedmont (9-5) won the opener 5-3, breaking a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth off CNU starter Brandon Cassedy (4-1). Lions starter Zeke Swartz held CNU to two runs and six hits in seven innings. The Captains’ Scott Crosson was 2 for 5 with a run, and Doc Daniels and Eric Wilson drove in CNU runs.

In Game 2, the Captains went ahead 3-2 with a run in the fifth and expanded the margin with Jacob Koenig’s three-run homer in the sixth.
