Villanova ousts UVA in WBIT’s 2nd round

Villanova took control in the second quarter Sunday at home and beat Virginia 73-55 Saturday in the second round of the inaugural Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament.

Lucy Olsen had 30 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals to help the Wildcats (20-12) advance to the quarterfin­als. They led 36-20 at halftime after outscoring UVA 19-6 in the second quarter.

UVA’s season ended at 16-16 as the Cavaliers shot 32.3% (20 of 62) and were outrebound­ed 42-28. Kymora Johnson and Camryn Taylor each scored 12 to lead Virginia.

NCAA Tournament

Colorado 63, Kansas State 50: Tameiya Sadler scored all 10 of her points in the second half to lead a balanced scoring attack as the visiting, fifth-seeded Colorado beat No. 4 Kansas State. The Buffaloes (24-9) will go to Albany, New York, to face the winner of between No. 1 seed Iowa and No. 8 seed West Virginia .

Oregon State 61, Nebraska 51: Talia von Oelhoffen had 19 points and eight assists, and third-seeded Oregon State (26-7) advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 61-51 secondroun­d home victory in Corvallis.

Raegan Beers had 10 points and six rebounds for the Beavers. Jaz Shelley had 10 points and seven assists for the Huskers (23-13).

Texas 65, Alabama 54: Aaliyah Moore scored 21 points as the top-seeded Longhorns (32-4) ousted the eighth-seeded Crimson Tide (24-10) in Austin. Sarah Ashlee Barker had 17 points for Alabama.

Late Saturday

West Virginia 63, Princeton 53: Lake Taylor High graduate JJ Quinerly scored 29 points as West Virginia won a first-round game in Iowa City.

Quinerly, who was 10 of 19 from the field, scored West Virginia’s first 12 points of the fourth quarter as the eighth-seeded Mountainee­rs (25-7) pulled away from the No. 9 Tigers (25-5) to advance to Monday’s second-round game against Caitlin Clark and No. 1 seed Iowa.

Kansas 81, Michigan 72, OT: Zakiyah Franklin scored 22 points, including a tying 3-pointer that bounced on the rim and dropped with 12 seconds left in regulation, and Kansas won in overtime.

Wyvette Mayberry and S’Mya Nichols added 15 points each and Taiyanna Jackson had 14 points and eight rebounds for the eighth-seeded Jayhawks (20-12).

UCLA 84, California Baptist 55: Kiki Rice scored 20 points, Gabriela Jaquez added 17 and secondseed­ed UCLA cruised at home over a first-time NCAA participan­t, which finished 28-4.

Charisma Osbourne finished with 15 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists. The Bruins (26-6) will face seventh-seeded Creighton (26-5).

Creighton 87, UNLV 73: Lauren Jensen scored 25 points, Emma Ronsiek added 23 and the Bluejays sank 15 3-pointers to win despite 30 points from Desi-Rae Young of UNLV (30-3). Morgan Maly added 16 points for seventhsee­ded Creighton (26-5).

Young became the second 2,000-point scorer in UNLV women’s history early in the second half.

Gonzaga 75, UC Irvine 56: Yvonne Ejim had 25 points and 14 rebounds as No. 4 seed Gonzaga overcame a slow start to roll past UC Irvine in the first round of the women’s NCAA Tournament.

The Bulldogs (31-3) rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit and led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter. The Zags shot 62% and scored 45 points in the second half.

Utah 68, South Dakota State 54: Alissa Pili scored 16 of her 26 points in the second half, Kennady McQueen added 17 points, and Utah nearly let a 20-point lead evaporate before pulling away in the second half for a win over No. 12 seed South Dakota State.
