John Wesley Bunting, Jr.

John W. Bunting, Jr. passed away on April 8, 2024, joining his late wife, Lucy Mitchell Bunting, in heaven and to continue their journey together. In addition to Lucy, John was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Huggett and John W. Bunting Sr and his sister Jean Bunting Elliott. He is survived by his children, Carey Bunting Gregory, Elizabeth Bunting Fink (Martin) and John Wesley Bunting III, and his grandchild­ren, Melissa Gregory, Joseph Fink, Oliver Fink and Morgan Bunting. John was lucky to be born into an extended family including the Huggett, Rollins, Goodson, Lawson, and Johnson, Watkins, and Bunting families.

John retired from Newport News Shipbuildi­ng, Hull Outfitting Design, in 1999 with over 41 years of service. John and Lucy were the owners of the Bunting Daylily Garden in Poquoson and produced 13 nationally registered daylilies. He was a past president of the Tidewater Daylily Society and a former member the American Daylily Society. John was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Poquoson, where he was a faithful member of the Chancel Choir for decades. He also served the church over the years including terms as Chairman of the Administra­tive Board and Chairman of the Council on Ministries among other roles. He sang with the Yorktown Chorale and at various churches over the years. Recently, he joined the Chesapeake Retirement Community and was active in the worship committee and would often sing for the various services held there.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 13th at Peninsula Memorial; Park in Newport News. The family will receive visitors Saturday morning from 9am – 10:15am at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home in Poquoson.
