William & Mary drops epic to No. 9 ECU

Teams combine for 44 stranded runners, 16 pitchers in 13 innings

William & Mary (25-12) lost a memorable 14-13, 13-inning baseball game late Tuesday night at Plumeri Park to No. 9 East Carolina (28-8) before a sellout crowd listed at 1,000.

ECU scored three runs in the 13th, and W&M answered with two but left the bases loaded to end the game. The teams totaled 44 runners left on base and used 16 pitchers.

W&M’s Henry Jackson, who had three hits and three walks, and Ben Parker, who had two hits and four walks, each reached base six times. Luca Trigiani and freshman teammate Trey Christman each tallied three hits.

For ECU, Ryley Johnson scored four runs and Jacob Jenkins-Cowart drove in four. Both hit home runs among their three hits each. Carter Cunningham was 4 for 7 with three runs and two RBIs.

No. 23 Virginia Tech 7, Radford 1:

The Hokies (24-10) won in Blacksburg as Chris Cannizzaro was 3 for 4 with a double and a two-run homer. The Highlander­s fell to 10-23.

Wednesday Norfolk State 8, Longwood 2:

Emmett Jefferson hit a three-run homer in the second inning and a three-run triple in the eighth as host NSU (10-26) defeated the Lancers.

Nolan Manzer (3-2) won with a complete game. He yielded 11 hits but just two walks, striking out seven. The Lancers fell to 17-21.

Hampden-Sydney 7, Virginia Wesleyan 2:

Jake Moore went 3 for 3 for the host Tigers (12-17, 6-11 Old Dominion Athletic Conference). VWU (19-13, 10-7) had just three hits, including a two-run double by Cox High graduate John Bastiaans in the fifth.

Apprentice 11, Paul Camp Community College 8: The Builders (33-7) earned their sixth consecutiv­e victory, defeating their visitors from Franklin at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton. Camp (25-17) led 8-1 before the Builders erupted for 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Apprentice’s Nate Yeary was 4 for 5 with three runs, Camden Weston was 3 for 5 with two runs, and Jeremy Harmon was 3 for 4 with two runs. All three of them had two RBIs. Justin Bradshaw (2-1) pitched four shutout innings of relief for the win.
