USC, Utah players help lead Roger Brown’s to semifinals
Ellis and Carlson spark the victory vs. K&D Round’s
Two players from the soon-to-be-defunct Pac-12 helped Roger Brown's Restaurant defeat K&D Round's Landscape Services 93-66 Thursday night in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament's first round as dozens of pro scouts watched at Churchland High.
Southern California's Boogie Ellis had 19 points and Utah's Branden Carlson added 18 for Roger Brown's.
Maryland's Jahmir Young and LSU's Jordan Wright had 15 points apiece for the winners, while Providence's Josh Oduro — who played most of his career for George Mason — had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
For K&D Round's, Alex Ducas of Saint Mary's scored 14 points, Memphis' Jahvon Quinerly and Maryland's Donta Scott added 13 apiece, and James Madison's TJ Bickerstaff had 11 points (on 4-of-5 shooting) and five rebounds.
Portsmouth Partnership 96, Sales Systems, Ltd. 78:
DJ Horne, a guard who led North Carolina State to a surprising Final Four appearance, scored 18 points for Portsmouth Partnership.
Illinois' Marcus Domask and Missouri's Sean East II also scored 18 each, while West Virginia's Jesse Edwards, formerly of Syracuse, added 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Bradley's Malevy Lyons had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Portsmouth Partnership, which outscored Sales Systems 52-27 in the middle quarters.
For Sales Systems, Texas' Max Abmas and Morehead State's Riley Minix had 16 points each, while Auburn's Jaylin Williams had 12 and George Washington's James Bishop IV added 11. Texas A&M's Tyrece Radford, who begin college at Virginia Tech, had nine points.
Portsmouth Partnership advanced to Friday's late semifinal against Roger Brown's Restaurant.
Friday Sales Systems, Ltd. 74, K&D Round’s Landscape Services 61:
James Bishop IV scored 16 points, hitting 4 of 6 3-point tries, as Sales Systems won in the consolation bracket to advance to today's fifth-place game against Norfolk Sports Club at 1 p.m. The victors were 15 of 34 from beyond the arc.
Jaylin Williams contributed 15 points for Sales Systems. Tyrece Radford, who began college with Virginia Tech, added 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including 3-of-4 accuracy from long distance. Western Carolina's Vonterius Woolbright had 10 points.
For K&D Round's, which will play Portsmouth Sports Club for seventh place at 11 a.m. today, Wyoming's Sam Griffin had 18 points and eight rebounds, West Virginia's RaeQuan Battle added 17 points and Donta Scott had 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.
