ODU dominates to win series against Marshall

Old Dominion whipped Marshall 12-2 Sunday to finish with two victories in a threegame series in Huntington, West Virginia.

Kyle Edwards had five RBIs, two runs and two hits. Bryce Jones was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Evan Holman was 2 for 3 with two runs for the Monarchs (21-18, 9-9 Sun Belt) against the Thundering Herd (13-26, 6-12).

Winner Trent Buchanan (3-1) retired 12 straight batters in relief and pitched 4 scoreless innings. Steven Trone and Brandon Pond combined for 2 shutout innings of relief.

College of Charleston 3, William & Mary 0:

The Cougars (28-10, 12-3 Coastal Athletic Associatio­n) completed a three-game sweep with their second consecutiv­e shutout of the Tribe (25-15, 8-7) in South Carolina.

W&M had just five hits, including two each by Nate Goranson and Luca Trigiani. Carter Lovasz (1-4), usually a reliever, started and gave up two runs (one earned) in two innings. Avery Neaves’ first-inning homer put Charleston ahead.

Georgia Tech 17, No. 10 Virginia 12:

The Yellow Jackets (24-14, 9-9 ACC) took the series 2-1 by scoring 37 runs in it, including Sunday’s 25-hit outburst against the Cavaliers (30-11, 12-9) before 5,815.

Matthew Ellis was 4 for 6 with three runs and four RBIs for Georgia Tech, Drew Burress scored five times and had four hits, and Payton Green and Bobby Zmarziak had three runs and three RBIs apiece.

No. 7 Duke 13, No. 23 Virginia Tech 10:

The Blue Devils (29-11, 13-8 ACC) outscored the Hokies 9-1 in the last three innings in Blacksburg, including 3-0 in the ninth.

For Tech (25-12, 12-9), Eddie Micheletti was 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, a walk and two RBIs. Christian Martin was 2 for 4 and drew two walks. Duke freshman AJ Gracia was 3 for 5 with two home runs and three RBIs.

In a rain-soaked game that started at 8 a.m. because of a bleak forecast, the visiting Warriors (16-22, 11-10 Northeast Conference) of North Andover, Massachuse­tts, overcame the Spartans (11-28, 6-15) to take their series 2-1. The game was stopped after eight innings because of weather.

Raphael Rodriguez, Justin Journette and Brendan Burke belted home runs for NSU. Journette and Jalan Jones drove in two runs apiece.

Merrimack 12, Norfolk State 8:

Scanlon hit home runs for Merrimack, which took command with a seven-run fifth inning. NSU scored three runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to pull to 10-8.

Late Saturday Old Dominion 3, Marshall 1:

A three-run fifth and strong pitching by starter Blake Morgan, Ben Moore and Jacob Gomez helped ODU prevail.

In the fifth, Jake Ticer tied the score at 1 with a leadoff home run. Kenny Levari reached base on an error and scored on a passed ball, and Evan Holman scored on a throwing error by Marshall’s catcher.

Gomez retired the last six batters for his seventh save, enabling him to share the national lead in multi-inning saves with Louisiana Tech’s Ethan Bares.

No. 23 Virginia Tech 2, No. 7 Duke 1, 11 innings:

David McCann scored the winning run for the Hokies in the bottom of the 11th before 1,826 in Blacksburg. It happened when Blue Devils first baseman Logan Bravo dropped a throw from shortstop Wallace Clark on what seemed like it would be an inning-ending groundout by Christian Martin.

Tech starter Brett Renfrow pitched six innings, yielding a run in the third. Grant Manning (2-0) pitched a scoreless 11th for the victory. The Hokies’ Eddie Micheletti Jr. scored on Henry Cooke’s sacrifice fly in the fourth.

No. 10 Virginia 8, Georgia Tech 7, 11 innings:

After squanderin­g a 7-2 lead after six innings in Charlottes­ville, the Cavaliers gained a walkoff victory before 4,853 fans.

Lafayette High graduate Luke Hanson led off the 11th with a double and scored when Bobby Whalen grounded a single through the right side.

Roanoke 9-5, Virginia Wesleyan 7-4:

The host Maroons (20-16, 13-6 ODAC) swept the Marlins (19-15, 10-9).

In Game 1, Roanoke erased a 7-4 deficit with a five-run eighth inning. VWU’s Thomas Crandall was 3 for 5 with one run, while Micah Fox was 2 for 3 with one run and two walks.

The Maroons’ Nate Prince drove in two runs, scored a run and stole two bases.

In Game 2, Maroons senior Jonny Wall, from Ocean Lakes High, scored a run and hit a sacrifice fly. Roanoke went ahead 4-2 with a three-run third.

The Marlins’ Nick Sylvester was 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Chris Mitchell Jr. hit a two-run double in the ninth to close the gap to 5-4.
