Bradish struggles as Tides fall to Jumbo Shrimp
Burdick ends long slump despite defeat
The Norfolk Tides’ winning streak ended at two games Sunday as Jacksonville won 8-4 before 4,720 fans, giving the Jumbo Shrimp a 4-2 series triumph at 121 Financial Ballpark in Florida.
Marty Costes was 3 for 5 with two runs and three key RBIs for Jacksonville, the Miami Marlins’ top affiliate.
In the second, Ryan McKenna’s two-run homer put the Tides ahead 2-0, but the Shrimp scored three runs in that inning and made it 4-2 on Tristan Gray’s solo homer in the third.
Norfolk pulled even at 4 in the fifth. Connor Norby scored on Kyle Stowers’ groundout before Peyton Burdick broke an 0-for-29 slump with an RBI double.
Dane Myers’ RBI single to center and Costes’ two-run double to right field in the sixth gave Jacksonville a 7-4 edge. Costes’ homer to center in the eighth closed the scoring.
Left-hander Patrick Monteverde (3-0) gained the victory despite giving up all of Norfolk’s runs and six hits in five innings. The other three Shrimp pitchers combined to throw four innings.
Norfolk starter Kyle Bradish gave up four runs and six hits in 3 ⅓ innings. Chayce McDermott (0-1) gave up three runs — none earned — and five hits in 3 ⅔ innings.
The night after a sensational game, the Tides’ Coby Mayo was 3 for 4 with a run.
The Tides will return home for a six-game series at Harbor Park against the Gwinnett Stripers, Atlanta’s top farm club. It will start at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday.
Late Saturday
Norfolk 11, Jacksonville 5: Coby Mayo led the Tides with six RBIs and, like Connor Norby, had three hits. Two of Mayo’s went over the fence.
Mayo drove a two-run homer in the first inning to set the tone. Jacksonville produced four runs in the fourth inning, most of them on Jonathan Davis’ threerun homer to left-center, to move ahead 5-2. But the Tides answered with nine runs in the next three frames.
In the fifth, Norby’s two-run homer to left drew Norfolk to 5-4 before Mayo grounded a double to score Heston Kjerstad with the tying run.
Noelberth Romero’s sacrifice fly brought home Peyton Burdick for a 6-5 lead in the sixth, and the Tides broke it open in the seventh. Mayo’s three-run homer to left and Daniel Johnson’s two-run blast to right-center put Norfolk ahead by six.
Norfolk starter Justin Armbruester struggled, yielding five earned runs and seven hits in 3
innings despite five strikeouts. But Tides manager Buck Britton’s bullpen shut out the Shrimp for the final 5 innings on just two hits.
Nick Vespi worked 2 innings for the victory, and Bryan Baker, Matt Krook and Wandisson Charles pitched a scoreless inning apiece.
