Second-career award winners

The Jockey Club’s Thoroughbred Incentive Program, designed to encourage the retraining of off-the-track racehorses, recently announced the winners of its 2016 performance awards program.

The awards recognize Thoroughbreds who accumulated points at horse shows in various disciplines throughout the year.

For 2016, performance awards were given in 13 categories that were broken up into 77 divisions. Statebred or residing performance awards were sponsored by several jurisdictions, and the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance sponsored an award for horses adopted from its accredited organizations.

“We received applications representing 423 Thoroughbreds competing in more than 8,000 classes and divisions during the 2016 award year,” said Kristin Leshney, senior counsel for The Jockey Club and administrator of the TIP. “Winners will receive ribbons, prize money, and a variety of prizes, including coolers, saddle pads, quarter sheets, and jackets.”

Category winners in their second careers, some of whom excelled in more than one discipline, included a number of horses by prominent stallions or bred by notable outfits.

◗ The unraced Senamint won the All Thoroughbred Horse Show category. The Marylandbred is owned by co-breeder Bobbie Gibbon and was ridden in competition in 2016 by Gibbon and Judith Schaefer.

◗ Undiscovered, owned and ridden by Lorraine Klepacz of Virginia, won the dressage category. The Kentucky-bred gelding is by Mineshaft, and was bred in partnership by William Farish, who stands Mineshaft at Lane’s End. Undiscovered went winless in 10 starts.

◗ Home Grown Lass, owned and ridden by Maureen Blackstone, won the jumper category under her show name of CL Debutante. The North Light mare, bred by Adena Springs, competed both on the flat and in steeplechases, winning once from 16 starts.

◗ Lia’s Wish, who showed under the name Summer Nights, won the hunter category under owner Heather Steele and took the equitation category under Hannah Steele. The New York-bred mare was winless in 10 starts.

◗ The unraced Sassy B, owned and ridden by Amy Parsons, won the eventing/combined test category under his show name of Wren Wrouge.

◗ The Thoroughbred Charities of America sponsored the Green OTTB Category for Thoroughbreds who last raced in 2014, 2015, or 2016. Back to Wine won the 2014 category and swept the English pleasure, Western, and in-hand categories. The Washington-bred, now owned and ridden by Christina Kline, put together a race record of 19-3-5-2.

◗ Mr. Waky and We Found Love won the 2015 and 2016 TCA Green OTTB categories. Mr. Waky, shown as Le Grande Cheval, is an Indiana-bred owned by Amanda McRae and ridden by Erin Butler. We Found Love is owned by MidAtlantic Horse Rescue and ridden by Bev Strauss. A Louisiana-bred by perennial leading Maryland sire Not For Love, We Found Love put together a race record of 22-4-4-4.

◗ Shootmetothemoon, owned and ridden by Eliza Herman, won the general category, encompassing all disciplines not specifically covered by another category. The son of prominent Kentucky stallion Malibu Moon was bred by the famed Overbrook Farm operation; he won once from 19 starts.
