HORSES TO WATCH

- – Mike Beer

SANTA ANITA COLOUR ME HAPPY

Trainer: John Sadler Last race: March 30, 5th Finish: 8th by 5 1/2 Beyer: 82

This claiming colt got buried and trapped inside with nowhere to go in the lane. He finished in front of only two rivals but is worth a longshot look against similar $32,000 claiming company.

PATENTAR

Trainer: Simon Callaghan Last race: March 30, 7th Finish: 5th by 2 Beyer: 89

One mile was possibly too short for this N3X turf comebacker, whose rally was foiled in a race won by the pacesetter. This was a promising prep-race comeback; he wants longer.

THE STREET FIGHTER

Trainer: Bruce Headley Last race: April 1, 6th Finish: 1st by 5 1/2 Beyer: 77

California-bred first-timer ran super. Broke next to last, weaved through traffic, angled out, and ran past the field. This Street Boss colt, produced by Grade 1-placed Silver Swallow, has a bright future.

CHATTERMAN

Trainer: Molly Pearson Last race: April 1, 6th Finish: 2nd by 5 1/2 Beyer: 64

This shipper from Turf Paradise broke slowly, clipped heels, fell far back, and finished with run in a better-than-itlooked second start. Follow in a similar California-bred maiden race.

MAESTRO DEARTE

Trainer: Pete Eurton Last race: April 1, 10th Finish: 3rd by 2 1/2 Beyer: 73 A first-time starter racing 1 1/8 miles, this Sidney’s Candy colt rallied from far back in a solid career debut. With a race under his belt, he is sure to improve.

COLONIST

Trainer: Jerry Hollendorfer Last start: April 2, 5th Finish: 1st by 3 3/4 Beyer: 84 Stretching out to a route after a single sprint, this Pioneerof the Nile colt crushed a modest field of maidens in visually impressive style. He can go up the ladder. – Brad Free

AQUEDUCT BROOKLYN GERTY

Trainer: Chad Brown Last race: March 31, 4th Finish: 2nd by 1 3/4 Beyer: 77

Lone first-time starter in field of six caught a sloppy track and raced greenly while chasing a heavily favored stablemate through the stretch. Settled for second, well clear of the rest of the field.

SHORT KAKES

Trainer: David Cannizzo Last race: March 31, 7th Finish: 3rd by 5 1/4 Beyer: 53 Turfway Park import was sharp in her first route attempt prior to arriving in New York, and she backed up that winning effort well. She was part of a contested pace in a race that ultimately fell to the closers.

THE GOMPER

Trainer: Michelle Nevin

Last race: March 31, 8th Finish: 7th by 9 1/4 Beyer: 71 Five-year-old caught a wet track for the first time, and it apparently didn’t agree with him as he was outrun from the start and allowed to just race on from the back of the pack in the stretch. He’s better than that, and his first start in New York for this trainer was a better-than-it-looked effort, trying to close in a race that was dominated on the lead.
