WOODBINE Silent Sonet seeks rebound

- By Alex Campbell

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Silent Sonet will look to bounce back off a troubled trip last time out when she runs in Sunday’s $125,000 La Prevoyante Stakes for Ontariosired 3-year old fillies over one mile on Woodbine’s turf course.

Silent Sonet was the 2-5 favorite in the seven-furlong Passing Mood Stakes on Aug. 2, a race that was taken off the turf. Silent Sonet appeared ready to move for the lead between horses at the top of the stretch, but ran into trouble at the eighth pole and settled for third under jockey Luis Contreras.

“It was just bad racing luck,” trainer Nick Gonzalez said. “Luis went to go up to a hole, and when he got halfway into it, it disappeared. Luckily, after she got bounced around there, she never grabbed herself or cut herself. That was our main concern.”

Leading rider Eurico Da Silva will take over in the saddle for Contreras in the La Prevoyante. Gonzalez said Da Silva was aboard for Silent Sonet’s five-furlong bullet work on the Tapeta on Sept. 1.

“I got Eurico to breeze her last week and he came beaming off the track,” he said. “It was his first time on her and he was happy with the work. She’s going into the race the right way, that’s for sure.”

KEY CONTENDERS

Silent Sonet, by Silent Name Last 3 Beyers: 77-88-83

◗ After a troubled trip in the Alywow Stakes on June 11, Silent Sonet bounced back in a big way to win by 5 1/4 lengths in a $40,000 optional claimer on turf July 8, and could do so again here.

◗ Even though she breaks from post 2, the added ground should allow her to work out a better trip.

Listenlindalisten, by Court Vision Last 3 Beyers: 76-80-73

◗ She comes streaking into the La Prevoyante after winning back-to-back restricted stakes on the Tapeta in the Eternal Search Stakes and Passing Mood Stakes. She’s won three of her four starts this year overall.

◗ Her lone defeat this year came in her turf and stakes debut in the Ontario Damsel Stakes on July 1, when she finished third, beaten just a half-length by winner Financial Recovery.

Kadley, by Silent Name Last 3 Beyers: 73-66-63

◗ Co-owned by Daily Racing Form’s Ron Gierkink and his mother, Teresa, Kadley comes into the La Prevoyante following a third-place finish in the Eternal Search Stakes on Aug. 16, when she was beaten two lengths and earned a careerbest 73 Beyer.

◗ She’ll make her second start on turf, but Gierkink said he believes Kadley can handle either surface. “We think she’s as good on the turf as she is on Tapeta,” he said. “In her only turf race, she finished third behind Niigon’s Bay, who subsequently won two straight Ontario-sired allowances.”

Hailey’s Prize, by Silent Name Last 3 Beyers: 72-74-70

◗ She was fourth behind Listenlindalisten and Kadley in her stakes debut in the Eternal Search Stakes.

◗ She runs on turf for just the second time in her career. She earned a 59 Beyer when second by a nose to Niigon’s Bay in a seven-furlong sprint on the turf May 22.
