Strong catalog for CTHS yearling sale

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – There is a strong chance that sale figures will be up at the CTHS yearling and mixed sale on Tuesday at the Thunderbird Show Park in Langley, British Columbia.

Not only is this the sale’s strongest catalog in years, but there is a major rule change that allows foreign-bred horses who go through the sale to run in the 2018 CTHS Sales Stakes at Hastings. Previously, the Sales Stakes were restricted to Canadian-breds.

Also, anyone buying a B.C.bred at the sale will receive a $1,500 credit if the horse runs at Hastings in 2018. Plus, any horses bred or sired in British Columbia are eligible for Washington Cup stakes races at Emerald Downs.

Who knows, maybe a horse like 2009 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Dancing in Silks, who was sold at the 2006 sale, will be bought Tuesday. Gracing the cover of this year’s catalog is the sensational Daz Lin Dawn, who was scheduled to run in Saturday’s $100,000 British Columbia Oaks after winning six straight stakes at Hastings. She was purchased for $15,000 out of the 2015 sale.

Of the 101 horses up for auction, 100 are yearlings.

Hip No. 50 should attract some attention. The Kentuckybred bay filly is by the popular stallion Orb, who won the 2013 Kentucky Derby for trainer Shug McGaughey. She is out of an unraced mare who has

produced two winners from three starters.

One of those foals is Life Time Citizen, by Proud West. She won her second start as a 2-year-old at Indiana Grand this year and finished fourth in the $100,000 Bolton Landing Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 16. Since it has been known to rain in the Pacific Northwest, local buyers will note that Life Time Citizen was the runner-up on a sloppy track in her debut in a maiden special weight at Indian Grand.

Local breeders Bryan and Carol Anderson have a halfbrother to Yukon Belle for sale. Yukon Belle was the 2-yearold filly champion in British Columbia last year. She also was scheduled to run in the Oaks. Yukon Belle is the first foal out of Queen On Line, who won twice at Woodbine and earned $199,302.

The bay colt by Cause to Believe goes as hip No. 76.

Yearlings will be paraded at Thunderbird Show Park on Monday beginning at 3 p.m. Pacific.

◗ Sunday’s feature at Hastings is a $16,000 claiming race for 3-year-old fillies. Astartobe and Ware’s My Jennie look like the main players in the 6 1/2-furlong dash, which drew eight horses. Wares My Jennie was purchased out of the 2015 sale for $5,000. The David Dahltrained daughter of Stephanotis has earned $24,255.
