How to play the Pick 5

- by Michael Hammersly

WO8

QUIDURA has been knocking heads with some of the best turf distaffers in the States and run splendidly. She got within a head of superstar Lady Eli when second in the Grade 1 Diana at Saratoga. STARSHIP JUBILEE rattled off five straight wins including a deadheat win in the Grade 2 Dance Smartly here July 2. She found boys too tough in the Grade 2 Sky Classic here Aug. 20 but she’s back in with the girls. (2)

BEL 7

ANNALS OF TIME is no doubt the best horse in here, being a Grade 1 winner, but he had a setback and thus hasn’t run yet this year. If he’s ready he wins, but there’s the layoff and this trip may be short of his best. CLOONTIA has the tactical speed to be in the hunt from the start. BLACK TIDE like to go as hard as he can for as long as he can and that makes him dangerous, particularly on a course that may be his favorite. (3)

WO 10

HAWKBILL towers over these class-wise after facing some of the game’s best in Europe. If he brings that form with him the others are running for second. JOHNNY BEAR comes off a super win over lesser. He has the home course advantage. (2)

BEL 9

LA CORONEL was not disgraced when fifth against some beasts in a Group 1 in England June 23, then looked like a filly who needed a race when fourth in Saratoga’s Grade 2 Lake Placid. Well, she’s had her race. UNI has posted two sharp outings since coming from France and looms a big late danger. INFLEXIBILITY ran third vs. males in Woodbine’s Queen’s Plate on synthetic but this (turf) may be her best game. (3)

WO 12

DEAUVILLE is a Grade 1 winner and placed going 1 1/4 miles but he may actually be better at this shorter trip, evidenced by a super third in a brutally tough Group 1 mile in England a couple months ago. WORLD APPROVAL likewise seems to have found his calling since being shortened to this trip. (2)
