Hute, Shining Source square off again
Hute and Shining Source finished a neck apart in first and second in the $180,000 New Mexico Cup Classic on Oct. 29 at Zia Park. They get a rematch Sunday at Sunland Park in the $85,000 Albert Dominguez Memorial Handicap.
The Dominguez is at 1 1/16 miles for 4-year-olds and up bred in New Mexico.
Hute, now 4, stalked the pace in the New Mexico Cup Classic, then fought off a bid from Shining Source, now 7. The effort earned Hute a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 79.

◗ Hute has raced once since the New Mexico Cup, finishing sixth in the $85,000 Johnie L. Jamison on Dec. 17 at Sunland, won by Shining Source. The race was run at 6 1/2 furlongs. Hute on Sunday will stretch back out to the two-turn configuration of his win at Zia.
◗ Hute won at two turns in the $85,000 Red Hedeman Mile at Sunland in February. He also won a maiden special weight at a mile at Sunland in December 2016.
◗ Miguel Fuentes Jr. has the mount from the rail for Michael Stinson and trainer Joel Marr.
Shining Source, by Source Last 3 Beyers: 80-78-54
◗ Shining Source ran a big race on the cutback to one turn in the Jamison, when he rallied from off the pace for a 2 1/4-length win. The Beyer Speed Figure of 80 that he earned is the best last-race number in the Dominguez.
◗ Shining Source is the leading earner in the Dominguez with a bankroll of $352,458. He is a four-time winner at Sunland and is the 123-pound highweight Sunday.
◗ Luis Contreras has the mount for Barton Ranch Stables and trainer Blake Rust.
Weather Dodger, by Weather Warning Last 3 Beyers: 66-53-54
◗ He won this race a year ago by three-quarters of a length over Hit a Lick and Shining Source, both of whom return Sunday.
◗ Weather Dodger exits a sixth-place finish in the New Mexico Cup Classic. He returns to the track where he has registered his four wins.
