Cousin Claire gets a second shot

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Cousin Claire gets another crack at the second allowance condition in Friday’s Woodbine feature, which is one of the rescheduled races from the portion of Monday’s card that was canceled due to inclement weather.

Cousin Claire was 3-5 when the betting opened for Monday’s sixth race. She was scratched after it was taken off the turf a few minutes later, and a few minutes after that the final four races on the program were scrapped due to flooding around the track.

After a three-race winter campaign in Florida, the stakesplaced Cousin Claire was transferred to trainer Catherine Day Phillips in the spring. She has finished third twice here in second-level optional-claiming company on the turf, including in a tough July 8 sprint won by Way to Versailles, who subsequently doubled up in the Grade 2 Royal North Stakes.

Five others were entered in the 6 1/2-furlong feature, which is scheduled for the grass as the eighth on a 10-race card.

has started twice at the meet. Trained by Roger Attfield, she wired first-level allowance types in a seven-furlong Tapeta sprint May 6, but showed little after a slow start in a six-furlong turf race at this level June 10.

Anita Partner, by Majestic Warrior Last 3 Beyers: 79-82-81

◗ She wasn’t up to snuff in third-level allowance company during the spring at Belmont, but should be a factor against this easier competition in her local debut. She has worked twice here, including fiveeighths in 1:02.40 from the gate July 27.

◗ Her familiar jockey-trainer combo of Patrick Husbands and Mark Casse scored three times here last Sunday.

Red Explosion, by Signature Red Last 3 Beyers: 78-74-68

◗ She finally cleared the first allowance condition in her fifth try June 30, when she pressed the pace en route to a daylight victory under Gary Boulanger.

◗ Her trainer, Sid Attard, has been on a roll, winning with three of his last four starters.

Blurricane, by Rebellion Last 3 Beyers: 77-64-71

◗ A restricted stakes winner on the Tapeta, she missed the board in her lone turf outing, which came in an allowance two years ago. She rallied for second after stumbling at the break in her last race.
