Smith promised during his commencement speech to pay off the student loans for the 396 members of the graduating class at the historically black college in Atlanta. Morehouse President David A. Thomas estimated the total amount covered by the gift at up to $40 million and called it a “liberation gift” that would allow the new graduates to have “the liberty to follow their dreams, their passions.”
