Into Mischief takes top spot

- By Nicole Russo

Into Mischief, powered by Grade 1 Test Stakes winner Covfefe, took over the top spot on the general sire list for the first time in his career over the weekend. Through Sunday, the Spendthrift Farm stallion has earnings of $10,316,277. Quality Road, who began the season with City of Light’s victory in the rich Pegasus World Cup Invitational, sits second at $9,636,174, with perennial leading sire Tapit also closing in on the top two at $9,526,970.

Covfefe dazzled when winning the Grade 3 Miss Preakness Stakes by 8 1/2 lengths in May, setting a Pimlico track record of 1:07.70 for the six furlongs while earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 107. She then finished third against older horses in the Roxelana Stakes at Churchill Downs. The winner, Mia Mischief, another daughter of Into Mischief, previously won the Grade 1 Humana Distaff Stakes at Churchill Downs.

Covfefe then earned her Grade 1 in the Test, outdueling Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress to earn a 98 Beyer. That keyed a solid weekend for her sire, who also had Sombeyay finish second in the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Stakes on Friday at Saratoga and Theory Into Practice win the Louisiana Cup Turf Classic on Saturday at Louisiana Downs.

Into Mischief’s other top performers this season include multiple graded stakes winner Owendale, who was third in the Preakness Stakes, and Comical and Kiss the Girl, who went onetwo in the Grade 3 Schuylerville Stakes on opening day at Saratoga. Comical and Kiss the Girl helped propel Into Mischief to the top of the juvenile earnings list, with $691,281, compared to freshman sire Constitution’s $494,487. In addition to his Grade 3 winner in the category, Into Mischief is the sire of juveniles Figure of Speech, Risky Mischief, and Shoplifted, all maiden special weight winners at Saratoga, and impressive Del Mar maiden winner Immediate Impact.

Into Mischief is the reigning leader among juvenile sires, leading that list in 2018 while finishing fourth on the general sire list, his top finish to date. Meanwhile, his son Goldencents, who stands alongside him at Spendthrift Farm, was among the leading freshman sires of 2018, finishing second by earnings and first by individual winners. Goldencents, the sire of millionaire multiple graded stakes winner Mr. Money and Louisiana Derby winner By My Standards this season, leads all second-crop sires by earnings, looking like a worthy heir for his sire.

Concrete Rose a heck of a buy

There weren’t many takers the three times Concrete Rose went

through the auction ring. The most the filly fetched in those outings was a relatively modest $61,000 when sold to her current connections as a juvenile.

That now looks like a rocksolid investment. Concrete Rose is now a millionaire, with victories in six of her seven starts for earnings of $1,218,650.

A Grade 2 winner as a juvenile, the Twirling Candy filly has won all four of her starts this year, all in stakes company, most recently winning the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks before rolling in the inaugural Saratoga Oaks. Those are the first two legs of New York’s new Turf Tiara, completed with the Jockey Club Oaks on Sept. 7 at Belmont.

Concrete Rose, bred by Ron Patterson in Kentucky, is the only winner from three starters out of the winning Powerscourt mare Solerina. There is no black type under her second dam, the unraced Sabrehill mare Sky Blue Girl.

Concrete Rose, an April 5 foal, was offered as a weanling at the 2016 Keeneland November breeding stock sale, but failed to meet her reserve with a high bid of $19,000. She went back through the Keeneland ring as a yearling the following September, and sold for $20,000 to JW Bloodstock. The filly then sold for $61,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-yearolds in training sale, with bloodstock agent David Ingordo signing the ticket. Concrete Rose now races for Ashbrook Farm and BBN Racing, and is trained by Rusty Arnold.

Constitution leads freshmen

Constitution, unstarted as a juvenile, won the first three starts of his career, including the 2014 Florida Derby in just his third outing. His offspring are proving similarly quick studies.

In a competitive freshman sire class, Constitution had a huge weekend from coast to coast to put himself atop the earnings chart. Undefeated Amalfi Sunrise won the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes on Saturday evening at Del Mar, hours after Our Country rolled to victory in a maiden special weight at Saratoga. Amalfi Sunrise is the second graded stakes winner from Constitution’s first crop, joining Saratoga’s Grade 3 Sanford Stakes winner By Your Side.

Through Sunday, Constitution, who stands at WinStar Farm, had six winners from 16 starters for progeny earnings of $494,487. That puts him ahead of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, already the sire of Group 3 winner Maven, on the earnings list. American Pharoah has seven winners from 25 starters for earnings of $404,022.

Constitution, by perennial leading sire Tapit, also won the 2015 Donn Handicap. The multiple Grade 1 winner is part of a solid quartet of freshman sires this year for WinStar, along with Grade 1 winners Carpe Diem and Daredevil, and classic-placed Commissioner. In fact, the WinStar freshmen swept the trifecta in the Sorrento, with Commissioner’s Powerfulattraction finishing second, and Daredevil’s Shedaresthedevil finishing third.

Commissioner is represented by seven individual winners – including Glory Road, a maiden winner on Saturday at Saratoga – and sits fifth on the freshman earnings list. Carpe Diem is 10th.
