Single Brad tries to regroup

- By Steve Andersen

Single Brad never had a chance to display his best effort in the $315,000 Governor’s Cup Futurity at Los Alamitos on July 25. The 7-2 second choice, Single Brad bumped with a rival at the start and did not recover, finishing last of 10 in his stakes debut.

There may be more lucrative stakes later this year at Los Alamitos for Single Brad. The gelding is nominated for the Golden State Million and Los Alamitos Two Million futurities in November and December.

The next objective is an allowance race at 300 yards on Friday, which can serve as a confidence booster.

Single Brad is part of a field of six in the sixth race on a seven-race program. Wagering is available through DRFBets. com.

Single Brad is trained by Scott Willoughby for owner and breeder Ed Allred, who owns Los Alamitos. This will be Single Brad’s fifth start. He won a maiden race in May in his second start and was second in a division of the Governor’s Cup Futurity trials on July 11, finishing a neck behind Constituent, who went on to win the Governor’s Cup.

Vinnie Bednar rode Single Brad in all his races. Bednar was injured in a one-horse spill on Saturday and underwent spinal cord surgery on Sunday. The rider is under observation and there is concern about his long-term condition.

Single Brad will be ridden Friday by Oscar Andrade Jr. Willoughby and Allred also start Criminality, a filly who won a maiden race at 300 yards in her third start on July 3.

Aside from Single Brad, the only runner with stakes experience is Flex Jet, a gelding who was third in the Freshman Stakes at 350 yards on July 12 in his fourth start. Flex Jet was claimed for $12,500 from Willoughby and Allred by current trainer Ramiro Zuazo in May. Flex Jet won a maiden race the day he was claimed.

There will be support for the filly Nonsense Coronado, an easy winner of a 300-yard maiden race in her third start on June 28 for trainer Mike Robbins. Nonsense Coronado is out of the well-named Political Nonsense, who was second in the Challenge Distaff Championship at Los Alamitos in 2016 in her final start.

The filly Rulentless drew the outside post and will be a longshot following a fifth in an allowance race on Aug. 7.
