Liam’s Map has a big day with three stakes wins on Saturday

- By Nicole Russo

Liam’s Map, among a stellar class of third-crop sires, showcased his versatility with a fantastic Saturday, winning three stakes at Gulfsteam Park.

The stallion’s daughter Crazy Beautiful punched her ticket to the Kentucky Oaks with a victory in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks.

Elsewhere on the card, Churn N Burn won the Grade 2 Pan American Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on turf, and Basin took the Sir Shackleton Stakes at seven furlongs on dirt.

Liam’s Map, who stands at Lane’s End Farm, finished fourth on the 2019 freshman sires earnings list, and was the only member of that class to sire a pair of Grade 1 winners in his first season, Basin and Wicked Whisper. Last year, the stallion finished fifth in his class by earnings. Through Saturday, he sits a close second on the third-crop earnings list to Constitution, as the two sport bankrolls of $2,110,605 and $1,999,427, respectively. He leads the list with three graded stakes winners this season.

Liam’s Map, by Unbridled’s Song, was a multiple Grade 1 winner who concluded his career by winning the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. As the racing season continues, he could be set up for continued success. Following Crazy Beautiful’s anticipated run in the Kentucky Oaks on April 30 at Churchill Downs, Colonel Liam, the stallion’s top earner this season, is pointing to the Grade 1 Old Forester Turf Classic on the Kentucky Derby undercard on May 1.

Colonel Liam won the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Turf in January at Gulfstream, and most recently took the Grade 2 Muniz Memorial Classic at Fair Grounds.

Caravaggio has first winner

Two-time Royal Ascot winner Caravaggio became the first Northern Hemisphere freshman sire of 2021 to record a winner, as his daughter Tenebrism won on debut at Naas in Ireland on Sunday.

Tenebrism, who is trained by Aidan O’Brien for Coolmore, Westerberg, and Merriebelle Stables, won by 3 3/4 lengths going five furlongs on turf. The filly is out of British champion and multiple Group 1 winner Immortal Verse.

Caravaggio, by Scat Daddy, won 7 of 10 starts in Europe, all for the Coolmore group. As a juvenile, he won the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and later won the Group 1 Phoenix in Ireland. He was again a multiple group stakes winner at 3, highlighted by another Royal Ascot victory in the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup.

Caravaggio entered stud at Coolmore in Ireland in 2018, but after a strong reception for his first yearlings last season, he moved to the international outfit’s Ashford Stud in Kentucky for this season. Caravaggio was represented by six yearlings that sold for an average price of $212,833 at last year’s Keeneland September sale, North America’s largest yearling marketplace, ranking third by average among first-crop sires behind Gun Runner and Arrogate.

Half-brother to Mystic Guide

The international Godolphin operation enjoyed an outstanding day Saturday, highlighted by homebred Mystic Guide’s dominant victory in the Group 1, $12 million Dubai World Cup. In a fitting note, Godolphin welcomed a new arrival earlier in the day, as Mystic Guide’s dam, multiple Grade 1 winner Music Note, delivered a Medaglia d’Oro colt in Kentucky just hours before her son’s smashing performance.

Music Note, an A.P. Indy half-sister to French classic winner Musical Chimes, won 7 of 12 career starts, all in the Godolphin blue, while earning more than $1.6 million. As a 3-year-old, the filly broke out with Grade 1 victories in the Mother Goose, Coaching Club American Oaks, and Gazelle, and finishing second in the Alabama, beaten a head by Kentucky Oaks winner Proud Spell. She concluded the season by finishing third in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic behind the great Zenyatta.

As a 4-year-old in 2009, Music Note added two more Grade 1 wins in New York, in the Ballerina sprinting and the Beldame routing. She again traveled to California to finish third in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic.

Music Note has produced four winners from five starters, with Mystic Guide her first stakes horse. The son of Ghostzapper was third in the Grade 3 Peter Pan, won the Grade 2 Jim Dandy, and finished a close second in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup last year. He opened this season with a victory in the Grade 3 Razorback Handicap at Oaklawn, which stamped him as the favorite for the World Cup.

Music Note is the dam of Gershwin, a 3-year-old Distorted Humor colt who won his maiden in February at Fair Grounds. Following him on the track will be Gina, the mare’s juvenile Maclean’s Music filly.

Unbridled Forever dies

Grade 1 winner Unbridled Forever died earlier this month, following foaling complications after delivering a surviving colt by Medaglia d’Oro on March 15.

Unbridled Forever, a 10-yearold daughter of Unbridled’s Song, was a homebred runner and broodmare for Charles Fipke, who has experienced a recent run of bad luck with his star-studded broodmare band at his CF Farm in Paris, Ky., this foaling season. Lemons Forever, the dam of Unbridled Forever, delivered a Medaglia d’Oro foal this month who died later in the day.

The losses were first disclosed by Sid Fernando, a longtime bloodstock adviser and consultant to Fipke, while speaking to national radio host Steve Byk.

Lemons Forever, by Lemon Drop Kid, is best known for an upset win the 2006 Kentucky Oaks. Fipke purchased her for $2.5 million at the 2005 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. He has campaigned Eclipse Award champion Forever Unbridled, a full sister to Unbridled Forever.

Unbridled Forever scored her biggest of three stakes victories in the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes in 2015 at Saratoga. She also recorded three Grade 1 placings, highlighted by a third-place finish in the 2014 Kentucky Oaks. As a broodmare, she is the dam of three surviving foals by Medaglia d’Oro, including this year’s colt. Unbridled d’Oro, a 3-year-old filly, has recorded one runner-up effort from two starts. She is followed by full sister Unbridled Medaglia, a juvenile this year.
