Boomcchero overcame adversity in debut

- By Randy Goulding

Impressive debut winner Boomcchero looks like the one to beat in a first-level allowance race for Florida-breds on Friday at Gulfstream Park. The 5 1/2-furlong dash on Tapeta goes as race 6 on the eight-race card.

Trained by Ronald Coy, Boomcchero showed a lot of promise in his April 13 debut in a $50,000 optional maiden claimer on Tapeta. With Jesus Rios aboard, he broke inward from the inside post and brushed the starting gate in the 5 1/2-furlong sprint.

After recovering quickly, the 3-year-old colt by Bucchero seemed comfortable being stuck on the rail behind Fastest, who set an honest pace, and Calypso Charlie, who was outside and slightly in front of Boomcchero.

When Calypso Charlie drifted out while tiring turning for home, Boomcchero tipped out and pounced. He took the lead nearing the sixteenth pole and drew off to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

The 84 Beyer Speed Figure that Boomcchero received is the best last-race figure in the field, and with any kind of move forward he will be a handful. He does have the breeding to develop into a decent horse. His dam did not fire in her only start, and two of his three siblings are modest winners. But his second dam, Platinum Tiara, was a three-time stakes winner who came within a halflength of winning the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies in 2000.

Boomcchero will break from post 4 with Rios up.

The main threat appears to be Adios Cole, another lightly raced 3-year-old. The son of Adios Charlie showed good speed when he won his debut in a $35,000 maiden claimer April 5 with Cipriano Gil riding for trainer Herman Wilensky. He came back with a solid runnerup finish in a $35,000 starter/ optional-claiming race April 26.

Adios Cole didn’t flash the same kind of speed in his second start that he displayed in his debut. However, he showed good determination to get up for second after losing ground when he went five wide heading into the stretch.

Adios Cole breaks from the inside post with Gil retaining the mount.

The Rohan Crichton-trained Heals the Soul is a nine-time winner, with all of his victories coming in claiming races. The 6-year-old son of Maclean’s Music just missed at this level and distance Feb. 21 and is coming off a third-place finish in a first-level allowance race for Florida-breds on April 11.

Heals the Soul owns the career-best Beyer in the field, an 86 he received for his victory in a $10,000 claiming race last December.

Heals the Soul is versatile, which will give Edwin Gonzalez more than one option, depending on how he breaks from post 5.

Rhum Saint Esprit was all out to win his debut in a $50,000 optional maiden-claiming race for trainer David Fawkes on Feb. 17. The 3-year-old son of Bucchero received a 72 Beyer and, while not impossible, he will need to take a big step forward to contend for the top spot.
